According to records on March 31, traders in the Western provinces such as Ben Tre, Tien Giang... are purchasing coconuts at 150,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits).
Green coconuts are the most sought after by traders and their prices are increasing day by day. Last week, the price fluctuated from 130,000 VND/dozen, but this week, the price has increased to 150,000 VND/dozen, double the price compared to the same period last year, making many gardeners excited.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ben Tre, the main reason for the increase in coconut prices is that coconut output has decreased sharply at this time due to the effects of prolonged drought, causing coconut trees to produce few fruits.
Besides, the demand for exporting coconut and coconut products such as coconut water, coconut oil, coconut meat to the US, China and EU markets is increasing.
In the domestic market, the Northern and Central provinces have entered the hot season, so the strong demand for coconut water is also one of the reasons for the increase in coconut prices in recent days.
Previously, the price of dried coconut also set a record when it reached 200,000 VND/dozen, benefiting coconut growers in the West, especially those in Ben Tre province, where the coconut area accounts for nearly half of the country's with 79,000 hectares.
Mr. Huynh Quang Duc - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ben Tre - said that the record high price of dry coconut in Ben Tre was due to the influence of raw coconut areas of other countries such as India and the Philippines, all of which had sharp price increases, some countries had prices 3 times higher than normal, causing the price of coconut in other countries to increase accordingly, including Vietnamese coconut.
