Information on the website of the Vietnam Geology and Minerals Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) shows that in 8 years, authorities discovered 110 mineral mines, including 25 different types such as rare earth, tin-tungsten, gold, copper, decorative stone, industrial limestone...
Of these, 17 large-scale mines, 43 medium-sized mines, and 50 small mines were assessed by authorities to have doubled the initial target.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has just announced the results of the project "General survey of minerals and completion of the 1/50,000 scale geological map of the Northwest region to serve the planning of sustainable socio-economic development".

At the announcement ceremony, Mr. Tran Binh Trong, Director of the Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam, said that in 2017, the Prime Minister approved the project "General survey of minerals and completion of the 1/50,000 scale geological map of the Northwest region to serve the planning of sustainable socio-economic development".
The project implementation period lasted nearly 8 years, through which 110 mineral mines were discovered and evaluated, including 25 different types such as rare earth, tin-tungsten, gold, copper, decorative stone, industrial limestone, etc.
In addition, the project has also delineated 7 areas with potential for deep hidden minerals, forecasted 15 areas of magma rock distribution with strategic mineral potential, and conducted detailed investigations of 3 geothermal areas in Dien Bien, Lai Chau and Son La.
The Northwest has rich mineral potential, including rare earth and gold.
Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Quy Kien said the Northwest is a region with a strategic position in terms of geopolitics, economy and environment, and is also a place with rich mineral potential.
However, the exploitation and use of resources are not really effective and sustainable, posing challenges in the management of mineral resources here.
Therefore, to maximize the survey results, as well as promote the great potential of mineral resources, Mr. Kien suggested that localities need to use the geological and mineral databases that have been handed over to serve socio-economic development planning, attract investment and ensure sustainable mineral exploitation.
