Để chủ động ứng phó trước mùa khô, nông dân Tây Nguyên đã áp dụng công nghệ tưới tiên tiến, tiết kiệm nước trong sản xuất nông nghiệp
To proactively respond to the dry season, farmers in the Central Highlands have applied advanced irrigation technology to save water in agricultural production.

Application of advanced irrigation technologies

In Gia Lai province, all irrigation works in the province only meet irrigation needs for about 67 thousand hectares of crops. To adapt to climate change and increasingly severe droughts, people and businesses in Gia Lai province have promoted the application of advanced irrigation technologies, saving water to minimize risks and improve production efficiency. The application of advanced irrigation technologies, saving water not only increases productivity and production efficiency, but also contributes to drought resistance for crops, especially at the peak of the dry season.

Advanced, water-saving irrigation technology such as sprinkler irrigation is prioritized for investment and use by farmers.

Advanced, water-saving irrigation technologies such as sprinkler irrigation, drip irrigation, drip irrigation combined with fertilization... are mainly and commonly applied to areas of coffee, passion fruit, durian, vegetables, beans, and flowers.

Ms. Kpah H'Hoa, Jut 1 village, Ia Der commune, Ia Grai district, Gia Lai province said: Thanks to the use of water-saving sprinkler irrigation technology, the family's 3 sao coffee growing area has enough water to ensure the best growth, especially during this year's dry season.

According to the Department of Agriculture of Gia Lai province, the province currently has over 57 hectares of various crops using advanced irrigation technology to save water. Of which, the area invested by people is over 45 thousand hectares and by enterprises is about 11.8 thousand hectares, an increase of more than 9 thousand hectares compared to the end of 2023.

Save maximum amount of water during dry season

In fact, the application of water-saving irrigation in production has many advantages such as: maximum water savings, reducing labor, increasing crop productivity... Especially effective in responding to drought and water shortage, contributing to reducing production damage.

Currently, Dak Lak province has about 212,106 hectares of crops, spread across 15 districts, towns and cities and is the province with the largest coffee area in Vietnam. The annual output reaches more than 520 thousand tons, accounting for more than 30% of the country's coffee output. In recent years, many farmers in Dak Lak province have applied water-saving irrigation processes using drip, mist spraying, local spraying, digging ponds to store water... for their garden areas. Applying this system helps reduce irrigation water by more than 30% and save 70% of labor.

Many farmers in Dak Lak province apply automatic drip irrigation systems to help save water and labor.

Mr. Le Anh Tien's family in Thanh Cao village, Ea Tan commune has 3 hectares of coffee and intercrops some fruit trees and macadamia. Of these, 1 hectare is installed with a sprinkler irrigation system at the base, the rest is irrigated with automatic sprinklers.

Mr. Tien said: Previously, my family used a water hose to water the roots of the trees, which was very wasteful, so the following waterings often lacked water. The peak of the dry season is also the season when crops need the most water, and the ponds are dry, which greatly affects productivity. In 2018, I participated in the Sustainable Coffee Landscape Cluster project, which was supported with a water meter and a mist-saving irrigation system at the base. Thanks to that, the amount of water is measured accurately, saving 30-40% of water, saving electricity, reducing production investment costs, while crop yields are high and product quality is guaranteed.

Mr. Y Pol Nie's family in residential group 5 (Krong Nang town, Krong Nang district) has invested in installing a drip irrigation system for 1 hectare of coffee and durian for 4 years now. Mr. Y Pol said that in the past, to water 1 hectare of coffee, his family had to spend 2-3 days with 3 workers. With the water-saving irrigation system, he only needs to turn on the power switch, adjust the water valves to water the entire garden. Irrigation water is pumped evenly to each root, averaging 30-50 liters of water/hour. After 1 hour of watering, the water absorption depth of the entire garden reaches over 30cm, helping to bring water and nutrients directly to the root zone of the plants.

Mr. Y Pol calculated that the investment cost of the Israeli drip irrigation method he is using is quite high, but in return it helps save 90% of labor, over 50% of electricity and water costs, and is very suitable for weather conditions and water sources in the dry season of the Central Highlands.

In the dry season of 2025, some localities in the Central Highlands are forecasted to experience local water shortages due to lack of rainfall and low flow. Therefore, the application of drought response technology will contribute to fundamentally solving the problem of irrigation water, helping farmers proactively source water for production and effectively care for crops in case of drought.

Previously, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed Official Dispatch No. 128/CD-TTg dated December 8, 2024 requesting ministries, branches and localities to proactively prevent and combat drought, water shortage and saltwater intrusion. The Prime Minister requested ministries, branches, Chairmen of People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities, especially localities in the South Central Coast, Central Highlands and Mekong Delta regions, to direct the review and assessment of water resources, develop appropriate water use plans to serve production and business activities, especially ensuring domestic water for people during peak months of heat, drought and saltwater intrusion; instruct people to proactively reserve fresh water, use water economically and effectively; prioritize ensuring domestic water supply for people, medical facilities, education and other essential needs, resolutely not letting people lack domestic water.

Heat and drought are complicated in the Central region and Central Highlands
