On March 8, the National Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with the People's Committee of Bac Lieu province to organize a workshop on "Application of science and technology in salt production to adapt to climate change".
Attending the workshop were Mr. Le Duc Thinh - Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation and Rural Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment); Mr. Hoang Van Hong - Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment); Mr. Huynh Chi Nguyen - Vice Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee.
Speaking at the conference, Vice Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee Huynh Chi Nguyen affirmed that the workshop "Application of science and technology in salt production, adaptation to climate change" is one of the extremely important and meaningful activities in the series of events of the Vietnam - Bac Lieu Salt Festival in 2025.
The Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Lieu province said that as a coastal province in the Ca Mau peninsula, Bac Lieu has a 56 km long coastline with diverse climate, land and water resources, with 3 ecological zones of salt, brackish and fresh water, which is very favorable for developing agricultural production.

"Regarding the agricultural sector, despite many difficulties, Bac Lieu's agriculture has steadily grown by over 7%, playing a supporting role, contributing significantly to the province's overall economic growth, including the contribution of salt. With a production area of nearly 1,600 hectares and an output of nearly 80,000 tons/year, Bac Lieu is one of the provinces with the largest salt production area and output in the country," said Mr. Nguyen.
According to the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Lieu province, among the 160 OCOP products of the province, there are many products directly related to salt, especially 2 Bac Lieu salt products that meet the 5-star OCOP standard and were granted a Certificate of Geographical Indication Registration by the Department of Intellectual Property in 2013.
At the workshop, delegates and salt farmers shared information and experiences from reality, current situation, solutions, and directions for salt development in Vietnam. Photo: An An
"The salt production industry plays an important role in the economy and life of many coastal localities. However, climate change is causing negative impacts, directly affecting the output and quality of salt. Therefore, the application of science and technology in salt production is an urgent requirement, to ensure the sustainable development of the industry," Vice Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee Huynh Chi Nguyen emphasized.
At the conference, the National Agricultural Extension Center said that salt making in Vietnam is a traditional, long-standing profession, and is an important production sector for the country's economic development.
At the conference, salt farmer Tran Viet Trung, residing in Long Dien Dong commune, Dong Hai district, shared that the application of science and technology in salt production by salt farmers faces many difficulties because most of them do not have access to capital. Photo: An An
Salt production, processing and consumption is an economic sector that is creating jobs and income for about 21,000 salt-farming households, contributing to maintaining security, order and social order in rural coastal areas of Vietnam.
In recent times, the salt industry has gradually applied technical advances and mechanization to production. However, the application is not much, mainly manual, most stages in production still have to use direct labor, labor productivity is low, production is mainly based on experience, manual, rudimentary equipment with unstable quality, salt often contains impurities, salt products have low scientific and technological content...
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Hoang Van Hong - Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center (standing) said that he had requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to continue to pay attention and allocate resources to develop salt production in the provinces participating in the salt project. At the same time, research and consider ordering scientific tasks to apply mechanization and automation in clean salt production according to the chain to create OCOP products for the locality. In recent years, the National Agricultural Extension Center has focused on supporting the application and transfer of scientific and technological advances through the construction of demonstration models for match extension.
From 2020 to present, the Center has supported 3 projects applying technical advances in clean salt production using sand drying and dispersed water drying methods with a total scale of 18 hectares in 7 provinces including: Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Ben Tre, Bac Lieu, with a total cost of 7.9 billion VND. The projects have brought about economic and social efficiency, and have been highly appreciated by local authorities, management agencies, and salt farmers in the provinces where they are implemented.
However, the National Agricultural Extension Center also believes that the salt industry is hard work, production depends on the weather and income is not high. The implementation of agricultural extension projects on salt industry contributes to restoring production, creating motivation for salt farmers to reinvest, restore production in areas that have been abandoned for many years, create jobs for salt farmers, encourage salt farmers not to abandon salt fields, maintain and develop the traditional salt industry...
According to the National Agricultural Extension Center, to produce salt effectively, the salt production planning area needs to be invested in new techniques, technology, and production equipment. Synchronous production, preliminary processing, processing, and product consumption should be organized, while at the same time, it should be associated with salt field experience tourism.
Attending the conference, salt farmer Tran Viet Trung, residing in Long Dien Dong commune, Dong Hai district, shared that the application of science and technology in salt production by salt farmers faces many difficulties because most of them do not have access to capital.
"Every salt farmer knows how to make salt, but to boost production development, bring machinery and technical advances into production, the most basic thing is capital. Access to capital still faces many obstacles," said Mr. Trung.
At the conference, the National Agricultural Extension Center said it had requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to continue to pay attention and allocate resources to develop salt production in the provinces participating in the salt project. At the same time, it will study and consider ordering scientific tasks to apply mechanization and automation in clean salt production according to the chain to create OCOP products for the locality.
