Industrial crops and fruit trees are the main crops in the Central Highlands. The time after Tet is also the time when the Central Highlands enters the dry season, farmers are busy entering the crop irrigation season. Although only 1-2 irrigations have been done, in some localities the amount of water in reservoirs and irrigation works has begun to decrease and they are facing the risk of water shortage. To cope with the scarcity of water for irrigation during the annual dry season, farmers in the Central Highlands have now applied smart irrigation technology, using increasingly popular water-saving irrigation methods. Thereby, saving water, labor and helping crops have enough water to grow and develop well. Farmers are busy, proactively providing water for coffee trees during the dry season.

Farmers "stay up all night" watering plants

Currently, farmers in the Central Highlands are focusing on watering perennial crops, especially coffee. After the Tet holiday, Ms. Le Thi Thanh Hang, Cu Klong commune, Krong Nang district, Dak Lak province, started to pull the first irrigation pipes. Ms. Hang shared: I have more than 1 hectare of coffee mixed with pepper. The most important thing in planting and caring for coffee is the timing of watering, so right after Tet, my family pulled the irrigation pipes for the coffee so that the flowers bloom evenly and the fruit sets a lot. The family also dredged and dug a water pond to proactively source water for irrigation during the dry season. Up to now, the water in the pond is still enough for a few more irrigations.

Similarly, the family of Mrs. Thai Thi Hai, Cu Dlie M'nong commune, Cu M'Gar district, has installed irrigation pumps for 2 fields with more than 1,000 coffee trees. According to Mrs. Hai, coffee is a crop that requires a lot of water, so it is watered in many batches. Usually, people water about 3 batches for each coffee crop, and in years with severe drought, they have to water 4 batches. Previously, the coffee watering season was usually after Tet, but in recent years, the weather has changed, the coffee trees bloom earlier, so my family does not take a break from Tet but takes advantage of the time to water to ensure enough water for the trees to bloom and bear fruit.

“The watering season is the most important in the coffee care cycle, it greatly determines the productivity and yield of coffee, so watering must be done at the right time. Because if watered early, the coffee will not have flower buds yet, the flowers will not be even, the fruit will be less, and there will be many difficulties when harvesting. If watered late, the tree will lack water, become exhausted, the leaves will fall off, dry, and the ability to set fruit will also not be high. When the coffee has many buds, you must water enough to hope for a bumper crop,” Ms. Hai explained.

Many farmers in the Central Highlands have to work day and night to pull pipes and watch for water to irrigate coffee plants.

In Gia Lai province, the prolonged heat has caused many localities to face the risk of drought, affecting production and people's lives. Therefore, the functional sector and local authorities have urgently implemented many solutions to prevent and combat drought to limit the damage caused by drought.

For coffee farmers, in order to provide enough water for the first crop in time, many farmers in Ia Grai district (Gia Lai province) "stay up all night" to water the plants. The reason people water their coffee gardens early is because about 1 month after harvest, the plants need water urgently to flower at the right time. If watered late, the coffee will be exhausted, the leaves will fall off, the branches will dry up and the yield will decrease. In addition, 2025 is forecast to be a severe drought, making people worried about the lack of irrigation water, so they proactively water early.

Mr. Tran Xuan Huong (Ia Hrung commune, Ia Grai district) said: Because the risk of drought was predicted early, before and after Tet, I was worried about keeping water to irrigate more than 3 hectares of my coffee. I have just irrigated the first time but I see that many ponds, lakes and streams are much dry compared to previous years.

Irrigation risk of drying up irrigation sources

According to the Department of Agriculture of Chu Se District (Gia Lai Province), the possibility of drought in 2025 is very high. Especially during the peak of the dry season in 2025, thousands of hectares of crops will face the risk of serious water shortage.

In addition to large irrigation works such as Ia Glai, Plei Keo and Ia Ring, Chu Se district (Gia Lai province) has about 24 small irrigation dams to provide water for crops. In the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, the district will plant 2,365 hectares. From the end of February to the beginning of March, there is a possibility of local drought in some localities that do not have proactive water sources and are far from irrigation works. From the second half of March, there is a high possibility of widespread drought in localities in the province.

Currently, the water level of rivers, streams, lakes and dams in Chu Se district is lower than the average of many years, especially the water level of Ia Ring irrigation reservoir after the dam subsidence incident is quite low. Although the district has implemented many solutions to combat drought, the risk of water shortage for irrigation is still present.

Mr. Tran Quoc Hung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ia Ring Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative in Ia Tiem Commune, shared: The cooperative has about 100 hectares of coffee using irrigation water from the Ia Ring irrigation reservoir. After the reservoir had an incident, the cooperative members were worried about the risk of water shortage during the peak months of the dry season this year.

In the 2024 - 2025 Winter-Spring crop, Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management Company Limited will irrigate nearly 52,992 hectares of various crops: rice, industrial crops, fruit trees, other crops... To ensure water sources for irrigation in the Winter-Spring crop, after the end of the 2024 Summer-Autumn crop, the Company has directed units to proactively close sluices to store water based on weather forecasts and water situation at the project.

At the same time, units proactively review and check water sources and irrigation areas of each project to develop plans to prevent and combat drought and water shortages. Special attention is paid to projects that are likely to suffer from drought and water shortages at the end of the season and have sources to combat drought. Currently, the Company has developed drought prevention plans for about 49 projects that are likely to suffer from drought and water shortages at the end of the season and have sources to carry out drought prevention work.
