Mr. Nguyen Van Tue's family, residing in Huong Binh village, Loc Yen commune, Huong Khe, with 2 sao, mainly grows corn and peanuts, but the harsh winter weather, low productivity, and low economic efficiency. Following the policy of changing crop structure and the encouragement of the Commune People's Committee, Mr. Tue, like many households in the village, boldly planted cucumbers. With training in science and technology and adequate irrigation, his family's cucumber area has developed well and yielded high yields.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tue excitedly said: "We affirm that cucumber plants bring high income compared to many other crops. On the family's 2 sao of cucumber area, each crop yields about 2.5 - 3.5 tons of fruit. The selling price is from 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg (depending on the time), after deducting expenses, the family's income is more than 30 million VND, 2-3 times higher than growing peanuts and corn before".

Winter cucumbers are sown by people in Loc Yen commune, Huong Khe from mid-October (al month), lasting until the end of November. After 40-45 days of sowing, the plants begin to flower and bear fruit and are ready for harvest. According to local people, cucumbers are easy to grow, but to achieve high efficiency, it is necessary to pay attention to technical stages. When preparing the soil, it is necessary to plow thoroughly, fertilize with decomposed manure, and make beds 25-30cm high. During the growth and development of the plants, it is necessary to periodically weed, fertilize, and check regularly to detect and treat pests and diseases early.

Mr. Han Duy Lam, residing in Trung Thuong village, changed the method by using large bamboo trees as stakes and using fishing nets to make trellises instead of using tree branches as supports as before. According to Mr. Lam, this method not only helps the trellis to be sturdy, not to worry about damage, can be used for 3-5 years, but also creates an airy space, enough light for photosynthesis, helps the tree to branch well, grow healthily and give a high fruit set rate.

"The method of making a trellis is low-cost, easy to make, can be invested in the first crop and used for the next 3-5 crops. Currently, cucumbers are purchased by businesses at the site, the price is stable, people do not have to worry about product output like before. Next year, I will expand the area, continue to apply technical advances to increase productivity and quality to meet the increasing demand of the market," Mr. Lam added.
Growing cucumbers together, a new direction for farmers
Loc Yen commune, Huong Khe district, the locality has favorable conditions for agricultural development, with crops such as corn, beans, peanuts, etc. Cucumbers were introduced many years ago, but were still grown on a small scale, mainly in the traditional way.

To improve production efficiency, in addition to coordinating with specialized units to provide training and guidance on planting and care techniques, Loc Yen Commune People's Committee has coordinated with enterprises and cooperatives to link up product consumption, helping people feel secure in production. At the same time, creating conditions for people, cooperatives and cooperative groups in the area to visit and learn about new farming models, helping people access scientific and technical advances to bring about higher economic efficiency.
One of the units always at the forefront of the movement to develop agricultural production in the locality, Nhat Hang General Production and Trading Cooperative (Loc Yen commune) has boldly tested the model of growing cucumbers using plastic tarpaulin and netting. In particular, when applied to make beds covered with nylon, weeding work is reduced, the soil is kept moist, nutrients are retained and erosion is prevented. The method of making trellises with fishing nets is very durable, only investing once can be used for 3-5 years, thereby reducing investment costs.
In addition to implementing a pilot model of applying new techniques. In 2023, up to now, this cooperative has cooperated with Bac Ninh Cucumber Company Limited to implement a model of growing cucumbers in the commune to purchase products for farmers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang - Director of the Cooperative said: "When participating in the association, the Company provides seeds, provides scientific and technical training to farmers, and purchases unlimited quantities of melons at prices depending on the market. Currently, the Cooperative purchases about 1 ton of cucumbers from members and farmers every day.
We hope that farmers will pay more attention to production linkages, actively apply technical advances to improve productivity and product quality, meet market demand, and ensure a stable source of income."

"In the winter crop of 2024, we also demonstrated 2 sao of cucumbers covered with tarpaulin and made a trellis. The model showed high productivity and efficiency. We will continue to promote the replication of the association, forming concentrated growing areas to increase productivity and income for farmers," Ms. Hang added.

Up to now, the total cucumber growing area of the commune has reached more than 50 hectares, concentrated in the villages of Huong Binh, Trung Thuong, Dong Giang... with over 200 participating households, of which about 10 hectares have signed contracts to consume products with businesses.
