The attack is suspected to have been carried out by Yemen's Houthi group, according to information from the British military.

The attack, the most serious in the Red Sea in weeks, comes amid a campaign by Houthi rebels to attack ships involved in the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The campaign has disrupted trade routes through the Red Sea, through which $1 trillion worth of goods passes each year.

The attack began when militants in small boats fired rockets at the ship about 140 km west of the rebel-held port city of Hodeida.

The vessel, identified as the Sounion oil tanker, with 25 crew members on board, was traveling from Iraq to Cyprus. The vessel has now lost control and is drifting in the Red Sea on fire. No casualties have been reported.

The attacks are part of a Houthi campaign targeting ships linked to Israel, the US, or the UK in a bid to demand an end to the war between Israel and Hamas.

Amid rising tensions, the US has sent additional military forces to the region, including aircraft carriers and fighter jets.
