2024 is the final year of exams according to the 2006 general education program. Many parents and students have proposed that exams in 3 subjects: Math, Literature, and Foreign Language should be held in the next school year.
Mr. Trieu Manh Hai (48 years old, Cau Giay, Hanoi), whose child is in grade 9 at Cau Giay Secondary School, aims to take the entrance exam to grade 10 at Cau Giay High School and Yen Hoa High School. However, when looking at the expected enrollment quota and the benchmark scores of the schools last year, he becomes even more worried about this difficult and harsh exam.
In 2021, Mr. Hai's eldest child took the 10th grade entrance exam with 4 subjects, struggling to review a large amount of knowledge from the subjects. "I remember the last 2 months before the exam, every day my child went to 3 extra classes, not sleeping before 1am," the parent said. In addition, the image of parents taking the 10th grade exam with their children, struggling to wait under the 40 degree Celsius sun also haunted him.
This year, the number of candidates is expected to be high, which means the competition rate is also higher, which is what worries Mr. Hai and other parents. "I hope the Department of Education and Training will soon announce the enrollment quota, exam schedule and reduce the pressure on students by taking exams in 3 subjects: Math, Literature, and Foreign Language," Mr. Hai expressed.
Sharing the same situation as Mr. Hai, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu (Tay Ho) whose daughter is in grade 9 at Chu Van An Secondary School (Tay Ho, Hanoi) shared that her daughter is not strong in Natural Science subjects, so she is very afraid if the exam is organized in 4 subjects and the 4th subject falls into Physics, Chemistry, Biology.
According to Ms. Nhu, since Hanoi switched to 4-subject exams for 10th grade admission, there have been 2 years of organization, 2018 and 2021, in which both times the exam was History. Therefore, Ms. Nhu is very worried that if this year the exam has 4 subjects, it will be very easy to fall into Natural Science subjects.
"With 3 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature, English, my daughter is always confident in her ability. Suppose the 4th subject falls into Natural Sciences, the result will be affected. I hope that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will consider allowing students to take the 10th grade exam with 3 subjects to reduce the pressure." , Ms. Nhu shared.
Bui Ngoc Linh, a 9th grade student at Mai Dong Secondary School (Hoang Mai, Hanoi) said that if this year the Hanoi Department of Education and Training organized an exam with 4 subjects for grade 10, Linh and her friends would still be able to meet that requirement.
However, according to her, taking a fourth subject in grade 10 will require students to review a very heavy amount of knowledge. Math, Literature, and Foreign Language are three compulsory subjects that must be reviewed, plus reviewing subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, etc., which is too much pressure for students.
"I hope the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will consider and organize exams for us with 3 subjects to reduce pressure. These 3 compulsory subjects are enough for both basic and advanced knowledge," Linh expressed.
According to information from the Department of Education and Training, the 10th grade public high school entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year in Hanoi will continue to be implemented in the form of an entrance exam. The Department will announce details of the exam schedule, number of subjects and enrollment quotas in the near future.
A representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training informed that in the 2024-2025 school year, the number of primary school students in Hanoi will continue to increase sharply, of which, the number of students entering grade 10 alone will increase by 5,000 compared to last year.
Ms. Pham Thi Le Hang, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Dong District, said that the district has 22 secondary schools with about 6,000 9th grade students. Schools in the area are implementing many solutions to guide the flow, helping students quickly identify their aspirations that are suitable for their abilities. This is also a solution to help students reduce pressure before the 10th grade entrance exam in 2024.
In addition to developing monthly teaching, review and survey plans for the three subjects of Math, Literature and Foreign Language to promptly support students, schools have increased the organization of consulting activities, provided information about school types, updated survey results of each student, and provided in-depth consultation for parents to understand, thereby having the best preparation plan early.
In the 2023-2024 school year, the 10th grade entrance exam will be held in 3 subjects: Math, Literature, Foreign Language over 2 days from June 10-11. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training assigned the 10th grade enrollment target to 128 public and autonomous public high schools, recruiting 1,698 new classes and 75,430 students.
