This is said to be the biggest trade union event in Germany in recent decades.
According to IG Metall, with a message to politicians and employers to preserve places and ensure the future of industry, around 81,000 people took part in a union action day for industrial safety in several German cities.
The protest took place in a context where workers in Germany are facing many problems with their rights and industrial enterprises are suffering from high electricity prices.
The demonstrations took place in five major cities: Hanover, Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart and Leipzig. At the demonstrations, the union put forward three main demands: job security in industry, financial fairness and social security for all workers.
With this day of action, the union is sending a clear demand for swift action, bold investment from politicians and companies and, above all, “for our future,” said IG Metall President Christiane Benner.
Mr Benner believes that without industry Germany will become a poor country, which cannot be allowed to happen. Therefore, he supports plans by the CDU/CSU and the Free Democrats (SPD) to create a special fund financed by borrowing to invest more.
According to Mr. Benner, all political forces must take responsibility so that "this key project does not fail".
"Without industry, Germany would be a poor country and we will not allow this... We expect more from employers. They are cutting staff and costs, they want to move and they are not trying to innovate or shape the future. But we can create the future, new technology and a green industry," Christiane Benner said at a rally in Hanover.
With the day of action, the IG Metall union is calling on employers to commit to making Germany their permanent manufacturing location, to stop job cuts, plant closures and the relocation of production abroad. The country’s new federal government must quickly improve conditions for industry and ensure social security during times of change.
IG Metall stressed that a strong, future-oriented industry is "a prerequisite for good jobs, fair wages and prosperity for all of Germany".
