Strengthening the provision of knowledge about intellectual property for high school students

Overview of the Workshop

The workshop was held in the context of implementing Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, which emphasizes the role of intellectual property in promoting innovation and enhancing national competitiveness.

Bringing intellectual property education into schools contributes to improving the country's innovation capacity and scientific and technological level in the new era.

Speaking at the event, Director of the Intellectual Property Office Luu Hoang Long emphasized the importance of intellectual property education for the younger generation, especially from the high school level. This is an important factor in gradually forming an intellectual property culture in the community, building a civilized and advanced society.

In recent times, the Intellectual Property Office has promoted the dissemination of knowledge and capacity building on intellectual property for the community in general and the youth in particular. However, the issue of intellectual property education for high school students is a new issue that has not been implemented systematically and regularly .

Director Luu Hoang Long hopes that delegates, especially managers and education experts, will discuss and propose a high-quality, specialized intellectual property education program for all levels of education. The education program, when implemented, will have a widespread effect, contributing significantly to improving the country's innovation capacity and science and technology level in the new era.

Intellectual property is a tool for innovation.

Sharing the same opinion with Director of the Intellectual Property Office Luu Hoang Long , Ms. Altaye Tedla Desta - Head of the Online Training Department of the WIPO Academy, under the World Intellectual Property Organization emphasized the importance and close connection between intellectual property and entrepreneurship and innovation.

According to Ms. Tedla Desta, intellectual property is not just a right or a protection mechanism , but also part of the foundation of innovation, economic growth, empowerment and access to markets. In today's era, products, services and technologies are largely developed from ideas, so ideas are now more valuable and meaningful than ever.

Intellectual property protects creative ideas, patents ensure that innovators can profit financially from their ideas and inventions, thereby promoting investment and encouraging innovation. Intellectual property helps create a level playing field for all creative entities, large and small.

In the era of knowledge economy with rapid development of technology, intellectual property rights need to be considered a fundamental aspect of education, helping young people to be aware of intellectual property from an early age. Intellectual property in life is often misunderstood as something related only to the issue of illegal use and handling of infringement. In fact, it is not just that simple, intellectual property is a tool for innovation, for market access and for negotiation.

Intellectual property education is fundamental. With the right knowledge and tools at the right time, entrepreneurs can protect their innovations , grow their businesses, and shape the future of the national and global economy.

Also at the Workshop, delegates listened to important presentations, including: Teaching intellectual property to high school students (Intellectual Property Office), WIPO's Intellectual Property Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Program (Truong Thanh Media Joint Stock Company).

Early education on Intellectual Property contributes to the early formation of resources and startup ecosystem.

Delegates discussed the current situation, experiences, advantages, difficulties and challenges in the process of organizing and implementing extracurricular educational activities for high school students in Vietnam in the past time; lessons learned from implemented models; and proposed the contents, solutions, methods and necessary conditions to organize and implement intellectual property education programs for high school students in Vietnam to ensure effectiveness and accessibility.

According to Ms. Hoang Thuy Nga, Principal of Tan Dinh Primary School, in the past, the concept of intellectual property was very distant for primary school students. Thanks to the support of the Intellectual Property Office, the teaching of intellectual property has been introduced to schools and integrated into subjects, thereby allowing students to access and understand this concept. For example, students are taught about copyright in the subject of Information Technology, organize class logo design, vote and honor students with good products, thereby honoring copyright, students understand intellectual property through specific and practical activities.

Mr. Dam Quang Thang, Chairman of the National Advisory Council for Innovative Startups, expressed his joy at the introduction of intellectual property teaching in schools, especially at the primary level. This activity helps the community to be aware of intellectual property early, helping to form resources for the startup ecosystem. Currently, 6 out of 10 startups encounter problems related to intellectual property. Establishing intellectual property rights early helps businesses a lot in the negotiation process with investors, contributing to increasing the value of the business in the most optimal way. In addition, research institutes can also use intellectual property rights to contribute capital to businesses or borrow capital from banks.

At the end of the Conference, the representative of the Intellectual Property Office highly appreciated the contributions and suggestions of the delegates, and affirmed that the Intellectual Property Office is ready to accompany the Ministries, especially the Ministry of Education and Training, agencies, units, and schools in activities related to the implementation of teaching intellectual property contents in schools./.
