Increasing commitment, investment and action

Vietnam demonstrates the highest commitment to TB prevention action.

In response to World Tuberculosis Day (March 24) in 2025 with the theme “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver”, Vietnam affirmed its determination to end TB by 2030 with strong commitment, effective investment and drastic action.

With the theme “Vietnam commits, invests, and acts to end TB”, Vietnam emphasizes the importance of making sustainable commitments, increasing investment in resources, and taking effective actions for TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care. According to Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital and Head of the National Tuberculosis Control Program, the main theme is an affirmation of the highest level of commitment, investment, and action in TB prevention.

In fact, in recent years, the Party and State have paid special attention to tuberculosis prevention and control, demonstrated through strong commitments to many specific policies and actions.

A comprehensive and solid legal framework for tuberculosis prevention and control has been built with the foundation laid out in the Law on Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases No. 03/2007/QH12 and concretized through Resolution No. 20-NQ/TW on strengthening the protection and care of people's health in the new situation. The Prime Minister has also approved the National Strategy for Tuberculosis Prevention and Control to 2020 and Vision to 2030, creating a long-term strategic orientation for this work. Implementing Official Dispatch No. 25/CD-TTg dated March 25, 2024 of the Prime Minister on strengthening tuberculosis prevention and control, intervention measures have been deployed synchronously from the central to local levels, proactively detecting cases and optimizing treatment regimens...

According to statistics from the National Tuberculosis Control Program, in 2024, our country's tuberculosis control situation achieved many important results with more than 113,000 tuberculosis cases detected, an increase of 7% compared to 2023, the rate of tuberculosis with bacterial evidence reached over 72%, helping to improve the efficiency of disease diagnosis, the successful treatment rate reached 89%, higher than the global average (88%).

Although the results of the National Tuberculosis Control Program in 2024 are considered the best ever, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), Vietnam is still among the 30 countries with the highest burden of tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in the world. WHO estimates that Vietnam has about 182,000 new tuberculosis patients; 9,900 drug-resistant tuberculosis patients and about 11,000 people die from tuberculosis every year. In addition, the rate of undetected tuberculosis patients is still high, and many patients do not have timely access to medical services.

Therefore, in 2025, along with continuing to promote TB prevention solutions; expanding and strengthening proactive TB detection and treatment associated with grassroots health care nationwide, Vietnam will develop a National TB Prevention Strategy for the period 2026-2030. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen communication activities and mobilize society to mobilize local budgets for TB prevention activities.

Tuberculosis prevention and community health care are among the important criteria for socio-economic development. Raising community awareness is important in proactively preventing tuberculosis, aiming to end tuberculosis in Vietnam.

Since 1996, WHO has chosen March 24 every year as World Tuberculosis Day to raise public awareness of tuberculosis and promote efforts to end the global tuberculosis epidemic.
