Small and agile, Phung Phan The Lam showed his talent for table tennis early. Not only that, he is always modest and inquisitive in both sports and studies. Many people praise him for being "both literary and martial" when he has achieved many remarkable achievements in table tennis and has been an excellent student for 7 consecutive years. Currently, The Lam is in class 8A, Tran Hung Dao Secondary School, Cam Lo District.

Meeting Lam, what impressed us was that she was slim, honest and polite. Lam said that she was born into a family of two sisters and her parents were both road maintenance workers. Although life was not very good, Lam's parents always provided the best conditions for their children to study as well as pursue their passion for sports. Lam said that her house was near a table tennis service business, so she often went to play since grade 4. Since then, she has learned to play table tennis well and has been passionate about this sport.
Lam’s talent for table tennis since childhood was strongly supported by his father, Phung The Son, who is also a passionate and amateur table tennis player. Son became Lam’s “first teacher” and also his “table tennis partner”.
To develop his son's abilities, despite his busy work, he still drives his son by motorbike almost every day, traveling more than 20 km to and from Dong Ha City so that he can practice, train and compete in table tennis at the Department of Education and Training's table tennis court.
According to table tennis coaches and physical education teachers who directly observed Lam practicing and competing, he is very promising and a talent of Quang Tri table tennis in particular and the whole country in general.
After nearly 2 years of training with Tran Phong Linh, an 8th grade student at Nguyen Trai Secondary School, Vinh Vinh District - also a talented table tennis player - Lam always practiced with enthusiasm and seriousness. With a spirit of learning, modesty, intelligent and enthusiastic movement and competition, Lam has made constant progress.
Thanks to that, when competing in friendly table tennis tournaments, tournaments organized by clubs and government agencies in the Central region in particular and the whole country in general, I have achieved many truly impressive results.
Specifically, regarding individual awards, Lam has won: Gold Medal (HCV) in men's singles at the Phu Dong Sports Festival of Quang Tri province in the 2020-2021 school year; Gold Medal (HCV) in men's singles, Bronze Medal (HCĐ) in mixed doubles at the table tennis tournament organized by the Quang Tri Provincial Children's House in November 2022; Gold Medal (HCĐ) in men's singles, Bronze Medal (HCĐ) in men's doubles at the Son Thuy Open Table Tennis Tournament organized in February 2023; Gold Medal (HCĐ) in men's singles at the Da Nang Open Table Tennis Federation in August 2023; Gold Medal (HCĐ) in men's singles at the table tennis tournament for all ages organized by the Department of Culture and Sports of Thua Thien Hue province in October 2023.
Notably, Lam was in the top 16 best players of the National Youth Table Tennis Tournament held in Tam Ky City, Quang Nam in July 2023. Regarding the team tournament, Lam also achieved many impressive achievements such as: Gold medal at the Phuong Duc Club Open Tournament held in July 2023; Silver medal at the Tam Duc Quang Binh Club Tournament held in the Arena tournament in October and November 2023; Bronze medal at the Dong Ha City Table Tennis Tournament held in December 2023; Gold medal at the Danang University of Sports Club Tournament held in January 2024; Gold medal at the Quang Binh Provincial Table Tennis Federation Tournament held in January 2024.
Mr. Son said that there were scouts from provinces and cities in the country, including Da Nang City, who offered to invite the family to send Lam to study and practice table tennis. However, the family and Lam decided to continue studying culture in Cam Lo district to later take the entrance exam to Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted. Training will also be carried out in parallel.
“I plan to study medicine and become a doctor. Along with that, I will also continue to practice table tennis, hoping that in the future I will have the opportunity to interact, compete, and learn more from teachers and athletes with higher levels to develop. Who knows, maybe in the future I will also become a professional table tennis player,” Lam shared.
