The incident happened on the morning of June 29. The victim, 57 years old, was seriously injured at the end of this “automatic walking path”.

Airports of Thailand, which manages six international airports in the country, said it received an emergency call at 8:40 a.m. local time about a female passenger whose leg was stuck in an escalator at Terminal 2. A medical team dispatched to the scene had to amputate her leg above the knee, AP reported. The woman was taken to two hospitals for treatment. Attempts were made to reattach her leg.

At a press conference after the accident, Don Mueang International Airport Director Karun Thanakuljeerapat said the wheels of the victim’s suitcase were also found under the escalator conveyor belt. He said Thai authorities would pay for the victim’s medical treatment and other expenses.

After the accident, the airport's "automatic walkways" were inspected and their operations were suspended.

The Airports Corporation of Thailand said its technical team would investigate the incident further. Officials said they had set up a committee to investigate the escalator incident.
