Witness of time

Tourists enjoying spring flowers on the banks of the Han River, in front of 42-44 Bach Dang, always try to take photos with the Doc Ly building in the background, located opposite the park. Built 125 years ago, the building's exterior looks very ancient.

According to many documents, the Governor's Palace was built by the French in 1898 and completed in 1900. Although it has a neoclassical architectural style with a simple symmetrical form, the building is not outdated.

Mr. Huynh Dinh Quoc Thien, Director of Da Nang Museum, said that choosing the Governor's building as a museum "is very meaningful, logical and reasonable" because the building itself is a "historical artifact" and exists as a witness to time.

Going back in history, after its construction, the French used it as the headquarters of the government apparatus. In the fall of 1945, the red flag with a yellow star flew on the flagpole of the Governor's Palace, signaling the success of the August Revolution in Da Nang.

During the Republic of Vietnam era, this was the City Hall - the largest power center of Da Nang City of the US and its henchmen. On March 29, 1975, the flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam flew on the roof of the City Hall, marking the complete liberation of Da Nang City.

“Despite the many historical changes, this building has always been chosen as the headquarters of the government apparatus. This affirms the stature and special value of a symbolic building for the people of Da Nang. Up to now, the Da Nang Museum project has been revealed, all four blocks have been completed,” said Mr. Thien.

New cultural icon

Construction started in May 2020, the new Da Nang Museum project was deployed on an area of 8,686m2 . With a total investment of nearly 505 billion VND, in addition to upgrading the ancient building, the "assignment" also requires the content and form of display to be scientific, modern, commensurate with the stature of a museum built in the early 21st century.

In particular, 4.0 technology must be applied in the exhibition to create complete and attractive experience spaces, helping the public to immerse themselves in the moments when coming to the museum.

Da Nang Museum has consulted a number of researchers and scientists, and consulted the Department of Cultural Heritage and the National Cultural Heritage Council to develop a detailed exhibition outline.

Accordingly, the new museum has 6 exhibition areas, including: permanent exhibition, thematic exhibition, open storage exhibition, limited-time exhibition, research and development exhibition, outdoor exhibition. In which, the permanent exhibition area shows the themes and highlights of the characteristics of nature and people of Da Nang, historical and cultural marks in the development process of Da Nang city before 1975...

The thematic exhibition area displays the cultural characteristics of ethnic communities living in Da Nang and Quang Nam province; introduces the marine culture, agriculture, handicrafts and traditional performing arts of Da Nang - Quang Nam people...

Director of Da Nang Museum Huynh Dinh Quoc Thien said that this is an opportunity for the museum to innovate its displays in terms of scale, content and form, and update new perspectives and techniques from Vietnam and the world on display science.

The interesting point is that when standing in front of the Da Nang Museum, if you are on Bach Dang Street, you will see the Governor's Palace with its almost original French architecture. If you are on Tran Phu Street, you will see the new building designed with a modern, harmonious and sophisticated architectural language in warm gray wood tones.

Once through the door, visitors will be exposed to the most modern museum technologies today with 3D mapping technology, 2D and 3D films automatically projected, image slides following the timeline through the art of light, audiovisual art, color art...

“After being put into operation, Da Nang Museum will certainly become an attractive address for the public, a new cultural symbol of the city, a highlight in the eyes of the people and tourists, and moreover, it can be considered the city's "ceremony room" in receiving diplomatic delegations," Mr. Thien added.

Chain movement

Da Nang Museum is temporarily closed to move artifacts from the old facility located in the core of the special national relic Dien Hai citadel (recognized in 2017) to the new facility at the Governor's Palace. This move will create space for the project to restore and embellish the Dien Hai citadel relic - phase 2 to turn this place into a "special destination" that cannot be missed by tourists with items such as: restoring the flagpole, the cannon house, the martyrs' shrine, the exhibition house...
