The decrease in the benchmark score this year is not unexpected because apart from English which is considered "easy", the other two subjects, literature and math, have strong differentiation, most clearly shown in math. Therefore, the candidates' test scores are lower, which leads to a downward trend in benchmark scores.
TOP SCHOOLS DECREASE, TOP 2 AND 3 SCHOOLS INCREASE
Statistics of 15 high schools with the highest admission scores in the city (from 20.75 points and above) show that all of these schools have reduced their entrance exam scores compared to last year.
Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District) with 24.25 points, although the standard score decreased by 1.25 points compared to last year, still holds the highest position in the city as has been the tradition for nearly 20 years. Following that are 3 schools with the same level of 23.25 points: Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (District 3), Nguyen Huu Huan (Thu Duc City), Tran Phu (Tan Phu District), decreased from 0.25 to 1 point.
With the announcement of the benchmark scores yesterday afternoon, the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year in Ho Chi Minh City officially ended with many emotions.
Meanwhile, Gia Dinh High School's benchmark score dropped the most with 1.5 points and from 2nd place in the 2023 benchmark score table to 5th place along with the University of Education's Practice High School, with 23 points in this year's enrollment season. This year, the University of Education's Practice High School is in the top 10 schools with the highest benchmark scores in the city, 7 places higher than last year.
Next, the remaining positions in the top 10 schools are Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6), Le Quy Don (District 3), Phu Nhuan (Phu Nhuan District), Nguyen Huu Cau (Hoc Mon District) with 22.5 points and Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1) with 22.25 points, also down compared to the 2023-2024 school year.
Similarly, after the top 10 schools, the leading schools of the top 2 such as Trung Vuong (District 1), Saigon Practical High School (District 5), Tay Thanh (Tan Phu District), and Vo Truong Toan (District 12) also decreased.
In particular, the 30 schools that increased their benchmark scores are mostly in the bottom 2 and top 3. In particular, the school with the highest increase in benchmark scores is Phuoc Long High School (Thu Duc City) with an increase of 2.25 points; Ngo Gia Tu (District 8) with an increase of 2 points; Le Minh Xuan (Binh Chanh District) with an increase of 1.75 points...
The trend of studying near home contributes to changing the quality of education.
Of the three high schools implementing the high-quality advanced school model, Le Quy Don High School (District 3) and Nguyen Du High School (District 10) decreased by 0.75 points and 1.75 points respectively. Nguyen Hien High School (District 11) alone increased its benchmark score by 0.75 points compared to the previous admission season.
Explaining the increase in the benchmark scores of Nguyen Hien High School, Master Pham Le Thanh, a teacher at the school, said that in the past 2 school years, the school has boldly applied information technology and brought artificial intelligence into teaching and learning activities. Science lessons in English have been gradually organized and taught effectively. In addition, the school also organizes a variety of clubs according to the interests and abilities of students. These factors have attracted more students in District 11 and neighboring areas than before.
In a general assessment of the city's general benchmark scores, Ms. Tran Thuy An, Principal of Minh Duc Secondary School (District 1), said that in addition to the decrease due to the impact of exam requirements, this year's benchmark scores show a positive signal about the quality of education among regions. Previously, excellent students from the inner city to the suburbs, in addition to taking exams to Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted and Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, only aimed at top schools such as Nguyen Thuong Hien, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Gia Dinh, Bui Thi Xuan, Tran Phu... Up to now, most regions and school clusters have schools in the top 15 schools with the highest benchmark scores in the city.
Previously, District 1 had Bui Thi Xuan High School; District 3 had Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Le Quy Don High School; Binh Thanh District had Gia Dinh High School; Tan Binh District had Nguyen Thuong Hien High School; Thu Duc City had Nguyen Huu Huan High School; Tan Phu District had Tran Phu High School... Now, Hoc Mon District has Nguyen Huu Cau High School; District 12 has Vo Truong Toan High School; District 5 has Saigon Practice High School, University of Education Practice High School; Tan Phu District has Tay Thanh High School...
Thus, parents tend to choose schools that are close to home, have outstanding educational quality and are suitable for their children's learning ability, causing schools with high admission scores to be spread throughout the city, according to Ms. Thuy An.
High schools with high admission scores this year are mostly spread across all areas of Ho Chi Minh City.
HOW TO RECRUIT GRADE 10 ADDITIONAL ENROLLMENT?
Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that after 10th grade students complete their application for admission (around July 31), depending on the actual situation, the Department of Education and Training will develop a second round of enrollment plan for schools that have not yet recruited enough students to suit the actual situation of each high school to ensure enough places for students in the area.
Students who want to participate in the second round of additional admission must be candidates who did not pass all three of their usual admissions to public schools. "High schools are not allowed to accept students who have passed the exam but do not submit their application and wait for additional admission. The additional admissions are intended to help students who have achieved high scores but did not pass any of their admissions to continue studying at public schools and to help high schools that are short of enrollment quotas, especially high schools in the suburbs, ensure that they meet their enrollment quotas," Mr. Nam emphasized.
It is known that in the 2023-2024 school year, the Department of Education and Training will for the first time conduct additional enrollment for grade 10 with a target of about 3,000 students. Accordingly, the subjects eligible to participate in additional enrollment for public grade 10 are candidates who have participated in the grade 10 entrance exam but failed to enter public grade 10.
Each student can only register for additional enrollment at one public school that has not yet filled its assigned enrollment quota. They cannot change schools after submitting their application for additional enrollment.
In addition, according to Mr. Nguyen Vo Dang Khoa, Deputy Head of the Examination and Education Quality Assessment Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, this year, right from the time students registered for admission to grade 10, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training conducted a survey of students registering for groups of elective subjects to high schools. Therefore, when high schools receive the list of admitted students, they will also receive information about students registering for groups of elective subjects. Based on that, high schools will arrange and organize appropriate classes according to their abilities and career orientation according to the 2018 General Education Program.
In particular, according to Mr. Khoa, after this year's entrance exam, based on the number of students applying to schools, the Department of Education and Training will compile statistics for each secondary school on the number of students taking the exam, the number of students who passed the exam, the number who applied for admission, and the number who did not apply. These statistics will gradually reduce the pressure and guidance for students to register for high schools that are "sure to pass" but are quite far from their place of residence, affecting the students' post-secondary education.
Other directions besides public grade 10
The enrollment target for grade 10 in the 2024-2025 school year is nearly 78,000 students, while the recent grade 10 exam had about 98,000 candidates taking the exam, so there will be about 20,000 candidates who did not pass any of their wishes.
The leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that there are currently many suitable learning paths for students after completing junior high school. In addition to continuing to study in grade 10 at private schools, many parents have oriented their children to study vocational training at colleges and vocational intermediate schools.
According to Mr. Le Hoai Nam, the vocational school system is currently developing quite strongly. Most schools have renovated their facilities to be spacious and modern, and improved their teaching programs to increase the amount of practice time and reduce theory. Students who have just graduated from junior high school and register for vocational training will be exempted from 100% tuition fees. Schools also meet the needs of parents by organizing high school programs in parallel with vocational training programs, opening semi-boarding and boarding classes... After graduation, students not only have a vocational degree but also a high school diploma, and can go to work immediately or continue their studies at university or college.
In addition, Ho Chi Minh City also has more than 30 continuing education centers. These are public educational institutions invested by the state, and are also a choice for students. High school diplomas of students in continuing education or high school are equally valuable when continuing to take university entrance exams.
