In the 2024 - 2025 dry season, the flow to the Mekong Delta is forecast to be lower than the average of many years, and salinity intrusion may be deep and unusual. Therefore, localities need to take advantage of storing fresh water during low tides to serve agriculture and people's lives to prevent sudden increases in salinity intrusion. In Lai Chau province, there are currently about 16,509 natural ancient tea trees managed, cared for and protected by organizations (Protection Forest Management Board, Commune People's Committee) and households. Ancient tea is a specialty, endemic natural plant that has existed for thousands of years in the mountainous areas of Lai Chau province. Ancient tea grows and develops at an altitude of 1,200 to 1,600m above sea level. The mountain climbing season is also the time to harvest ancient tea trees. Quang Kim Commune is one of the major vegetable growing areas of the mountainous district of Bat Xat, Lao Cai Province. During the historic flood caused by the circulation of storm No. 3, Quang Kim suffered heavy damage due to waterlogging. After the water receded, sand filled the old cultivated area. Not afraid of difficulties, farmers in the commune quickly restored and planted nearly 30 hectares of corn. Before the corn could take root, the newly planted corn was submerged by the flood; all the efforts of the farmers went down the drain. Not giving in to difficulties and natural disasters, the farmers focused on improving the land to produce winter vegetables.
Mr. Do Van Nguyen's family in An Thanh village, Quang Kim commune has about 1 hectare of land for production, but it is covered by a layer of sandy soil up to a meter thick. His family has had to spend tens of millions of dong to buy fertilizer to spread and improve the new layer of soil. It is estimated that production costs have increased 3-4 times, but if they do not do it right away, their livelihood will be gone. Not to mention, if the land is left fallow, it will also become infertile over the years.
"The old soil is covered with sand. If we want to replant, we have to fertilize and add nutrients to the soil, but it's too expensive. We certainly can't make a profit right away, but we still have to do it in the long run, because this is the livelihood of the whole family," Mr. Nguyen shared.
Mr. Tran Quang Quan in Y Ty commune, Bat Xat district grows cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower... on an area of 20 hectares at the foot of Lao Than mountain. Previously, this land was barren, with cold winters and snowfall, so the land was left empty. From his love for this land, he decided to leave the city to live in Y Ty, turning the land into "green gold".
After more than 20 years of diligently improving the land for cultivation, he has grown vegetables that meet export standards to demanding markets. According to Mr. Quan, to develop agriculture in this area with its unique climate and soil, it is necessary to find suitable crops, maintain a clean ecological environment, and not use chemicals.
In the highlands like Y Ty, the climate is cool, the winter is cold and long, so there are few insects and pests, so it is very advantageous to grow vegetables out of season. Currently, cabbage and Chinese cabbage are sold by him everywhere from North to South. In particular, cabbage has received orders from Korea and Taiwan (China)...
However, the difficulty in developing vegetable production in Y Ty today is not only due to the fact that floods have destroyed and eroded soil nutrients, but also damaged roads. After storm No. 3, the traffic infrastructure was damaged, roads were extremely difficult to travel, causing the cost of transporting agricultural products to increase...
Therefore, people expect the State to continue to pay attention to investing in transport infrastructure, supporting the conversion of crops and livestock, and applying science and technology to production. Only then can vegetables be produced regularly, bringing in income many times higher than rice and corn.
Mr. Sy Trung Kien, Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Bat Xat district, said: After completing the land improvement, farmers focused on winter crops that prefer cold weather, such as potatoes and vegetables. Some products have been guaranteed by businesses.
"We have also supported seeds for concentrated planting because many households only have a few hundred square meters, while the norm is only 2.7 ounces of seeds per hectare. Places where businesses have signed contracts to purchase products are supported with seeds based on the connection between the commune, people and businesses to avoid loss and waste of seeds," Mr. Kien added.
The fields that were once buried deep in trash, rocks, and sand due to floods have gradually been covered with green again, helping farmers in the highlands of Bat Xat gradually improve and enhance their lives.
More importantly, when changing farming habits, from self-sufficiency to large-scale, commercial vegetable growing with high income, people in the highlands will improve their living conditions, narrowing the gap between remote areas and lowlands.
