The death toll from a fatal train accident in eastern India has risen to more than 1,000, according to new figures.
Specifically, as of 6:00 a.m. on June 3, at least 207 people had died and 850 were injured in this horrific accident. Hundreds of people, especially young people, lined up at hospitals to donate blood to help the victims.
The accident occurred after the Coromandel Express passenger train running from Kolkata to Chennai derailed and overturned after colliding with a goods train in Balasore district of Odisha state on June 2.
Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, while government and air force teams were also mobilized to help. Local authorities confirmed that nearly 50 ambulances were dispatched to transport the injured to hospitals, in addition to a large number of buses that were also mobilized to support the rescue efforts.
On Twitter, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi affirmed that he would mobilize all necessary assistance to help the victims.
