The results of a recently published study show that the loneliness level of fourth-year students tends to be the highest among all students.

The research project "The relationship between loneliness and school stress with academic performance of students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Ho Chi Minh City National University" has just been announced at the international scientific conference on mental health, this afternoon, November 8.

Why do fourth-year students have the highest level of loneliness?

In this study, nearly 640 subjects were validly recorded, including 563 females and 75 males, all of whom were first- to fourth-year students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University).

The research results showed that the loneliness of the surveyed student group fluctuated at a low-average level.

Notably, fourth-year students' loneliness levels tended to be the highest among all other years.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Van, representative of the research group, said that this can be explained by the fact that fourth-year students have tasks for the new environment, internship, graduation, work...

"The cycle of real life with other economic pressures is sometimes an obstacle and difficulty for fourth-year students compared to students in other years in investing time and quality in relationships in life," Ms. Van commented.

Higher student loneliness, lower school stress

According to the data collected by the research team, first-year students have the lowest stress rate. This can be explained because they are new students in university, have relatively little homework and knowledge, and do not worry too much about internships, work, etc., so they are less stressed than students in the upper grades.

The study also found a negative correlation between loneliness and academic stress in students, meaning that the higher the level of loneliness in students, the lower their level of academic stress and vice versa.

"People often tend to seek out activities and entertainment services that help them relax to deal with loneliness, even alcohol. This may partly explain why lonely students are less likely to experience school stress.

Because they will tend to focus on entertainment activities, or build quality relationships around themselves to fill the loneliness - their current motivation, instead of being pressured by grades or paying much attention to studying," the research team said.

In contrast, with low to very weak loneliness, young people will feel connected and have a sense of belonging with quality relationships in life.

Students with low levels of loneliness are likely to exhibit a tendency to seek self-affirmation in areas of life, typically in academics through achievement and grades.

A certain level of stress is perfectly healthy for students.

In addition, the research team also found that a factor that can significantly predict the variation of learning outcomes is school stress. The results show that the level of school stress can have an impact on increasing learning outcomes in students.

This can be explained that if students are stressed to a certain extent, this stress is completely useful. It can become a driving force for development and healthy competition for learners.

However, it is important to ensure that stress levels are moderate because severe stress can have a significant negative impact on student performance.
