3 years ago, Ms. TTTV got pregnant for the first time but it was not complete. About 1 month after the miscarriage, Ms. V. discovered a 4-5cm tumor in her left breast. She went to Da Nang Family General Hospital for examination and performed the necessary paraclinical tests, and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Previously, Ms. V. had no medical history and had never had a regular breast check-up.
Ms. V. was extremely shocked because she was very young (she was only 27 years old when she was diagnosed), a rare age for breast cancer. She was even more worried not only about her health but also about her ability to become a mother in the future.
MSc. Dr. Bui Thi Nhu Quynh (Breast Unit - Family General Hospital) commented that Ms. V's case could be a type of pregnancy-related breast cancer, which is very rare, highly malignant, progresses very quickly, and most cases are detected at a late stage with symptoms of a clearly palpable tumor and large size. Ms. V was fortunate to be detected early, if she is confident in active treatment, the opportunity to fulfill her role as a mother is still hopeful.
During the next 2 years, Ms. V. was treated for breast cancer at a specialized hospital with a regimen of mastectomy, chemotherapy, etc. When her health stabilized, Ms. V. successfully became pregnant for the second time, to the surprise, joy, and worry of her family and doctors.
Throughout her pregnancy, Ms. V. was closely monitored by doctors for obstetric, fetal and breast health. Thanks to that, Ms. V. hardly encountered any serious problems, only a little pain in the surgical area in the last months of pregnancy.
At 38 weeks of pregnancy, Ms. V. had a safe and proactive cesarean section. The baby boy was born safely, weighing 2,600 grams. Currently, both mother and child are in stable health.
Ms. V's story is a testament to the fact that early detection of breast cancer and timely treatment will bring good results. In many cases, breast cancer is discovered during pregnancy and is very difficult to treat and handle. Because if the fetus is removed early, it will affect the newborn, but if the fetus is allowed to reach full term, breast cancer will develop rapidly, with the risk of metastasis or late stage cancer. Sometimes, a difficult choice must be made between saving the mother or saving the child.
Doctors at Family General Hospital recommend that women should have breast cancer screening every 6 months to 1 year.
In order to accompany women in the journey against breast cancer, Gia Dinh General Hospital has implemented a program called "Pink Bow".
Accordingly, with a breast ultrasound result that does not detect any abnormalities at Gia Dinh General Hospital, the hospital will automatically contribute 10,000 VND to the Pink Ribbon Fund. The fund is used to support 100% of the screening costs for patients with results confirming breast cancer at Gia Dinh General Hospital.
Implemented since October 2024, up to now, thousands of "Pink Bows" have been given away, helping the fund grow stronger, accompanying and sharing with many women who are unfortunately sick.
