Mbappe PLAYS WORSE AND WORSE
After more than an hour of play, Real Madrid finally had their first shot on target, in a 0-2 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League. Of course, it had to be on target, because it was… a penalty. But Kylian Mbappe still couldn’t score. Mbappe is the epitome of Real Madrid’s lackluster form at the moment: a defeat, but also a defeat without or without a solution.
Real Madrid has no way out
This was Real's third defeat in five matches, leaving them in 24th place out of 36 in the Champions League standings. Teams below 24th place will be eliminated when the "league" phase ends after eight matches.
At the press conference before the La Liga match last weekend, coach Carlo Ancelotti was asked 13 questions, including 5 about Mbappe. There was also a somewhat irresponsible question: is Mbappe suffering from some kind of mental problem? That's Mbappe at the club. As for the French national team, Mbappe has been left out of the squad for the last 2 matches by coach Didier Deschamps. He is considering stripping Mbappe of the captaincy. And he was taken aback when the press kept asking about Mbappe: "Leave him alone!".
At least Mbappe scored in La Liga last weekend, and that goal seemed to support coach Ancelotti's answer: "Just a little more time, Mbappe will score again, and everything will be fine". In fact, scoring to help Real beat weak opponent Leganes 3-0 is a detail that can easily cause illusions. Before Leganes, Real beat Osasuna 4-0. In La Liga, many small teams advocate "giving up" when facing Real or Barcelona. They would rather concentrate their forces to fight with opponents of equal strength. At Real's level, only big matches can truly give an accurate view.
TROUBLE COMES FROM EVERY DIRECTION
Real Madrid lost comprehensively to a Liverpool side that didn't necessarily need to win (Liverpool also have a much more important match against Manchester City this weekend). Coach Ancelotti commented on the missed penalty: "It was because Mbappe was a bit lacking in confidence". That's too easy to say, because Mbappe certainly can't be confident at the moment. He has only scored 1 goal in the last 6 matches (that was the meaningless goal against Leganes). But, apart from the confidence issue, is Mbappe really... bad? This isn't the first time Mbappe has missed a penalty.
Everyone knows that Real has been weakened in recent weeks due to injury problems. Right before the match against Liverpool, Real fans were disappointed to see Vinicius Junior join the injury list that already included David Alaba, Eder Militao, Aurelien Tchouameni, Rodrygo, Dani Carvajal. Lucas Vazquez, Federico Valverde are "doubtful". Thibaut Courtois has just recovered. Now, it is Eduardo Camavinga's turn to be injured in the loss to Liverpool, it is not clear how long he will be out. Camavinga is "irreplaceable" in the Real squad. Coach Ancelotti is very experienced while his son, Davide Ancelotti, is a great assistant. But losing half the team due to injury is something they have never experienced.
In terms of playing style, everyone is skeptical about the possibility of success when Real strengthens Mbappe in their already star-studded attack. The problem is not having another big star as a backup. Mbappe is excellent, provided he has the support of his teammates, in a reasonable playing style. He is not the type of star who is both intelligent and experienced, to be able to turn the situation around on his own (like Luka Modric). And he is only good when playing on the left wing, which is Vinicius's domain. On the one hand, Real has not yet introduced any special tactics to make the most of their attacking stars. On the other hand, when the forward line is not yet in sync, a bigger problem arises in the midfield. No one can fill the huge gap left by Toni Kroos. And Real's leadership has to deal with new pressure, arising from problems named Mbappe or Kroos: how is the management, making Real so mediocre in the transfer field?
