Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu
China Daily reported on July 4 that Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Li Shangfu met with Russian Navy Commander Nikolai Yevmenov in Beijing the day before to discuss bilateral defense cooperation.
According to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, Mr. Li said that under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese and Russian militaries have developed steadily, and the two navies frequently interact and exchange.
Minister Li expressed hope that the two sides would strengthen communication at all levels, regularly hold joint exercises, patrols and competitions, and expand practical cooperation in specialized fields to actively contribute to peace and stability in the region and the world.
Mr. Yevmenov stated that Russia attaches importance to strengthening practical cooperation between the two countries' armies in many fields.

He said Russia is willing to maintain close coordination with China, steadfastly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, continue to expand naval exchanges at all levels, jointly hold important joint exercises such as joint naval exercises and patrols, and always push the military relations between the two countries to a higher level.
On the Russian media side, TASS news agency quoted a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry saying that Mr. Yevmenov and Minister Li exchanged opinions on further cooperation in the naval field, specifically in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Mr. Yevmenov is also scheduled to meet with Commander of the Chinese Navy Dong Jun, visit shipbuilding enterprises, naval bases and training centers in Shanghai and Qingdao.
The Russian Navy Commander also visited ships of the country's forces in the Pacific region that are visiting China on a long-range voyage.
