Swimming and drowning rescue competitions are organized by many localities, attracting students to participate.
Summer is the time when children's entertainment needs increase, including swimming activities. However, this activity also leads to many tragic drowning incidents. There are many causes of drowning accidents in children. Most of them are due to carelessness in managing children by parents.
On the other hand, the dissemination and education of safe swimming skills for children still have many limitations. Organizing swimming competitions into a vibrant playground, encouraging investment in swimming facilities, opening high-peak swimming classes during the summer, promoting with many solutions and diversifying channels to reach people and children... are the key contents that professional sectors are striving to implement.
According to statistics from the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (LĐ-TB&XH) of An Giang, since the beginning of the year, there have been 8 cases of child drowning accidents in the province. The most common places where children have accidents are: fish ponds behind the house, ponds or rivers in front of the house, and most often when they go swimming in the river without adult supervision.
There are many reasons for drowning accidents, including the responsibility of parents and caregivers. Because the children are too young, their swimming skills and knowledge of drowning prevention and safety are limited. In addition, there are many other reasons from living conditions, environment, local management role, infrastructure investment policies that do not meet the needs...
Many forms of propaganda are carried out by agencies from the province to the grassroots, diversified on media channels, including some mountainous localities, although there are few rivers and canals, children still drown.
Typically, in Luong Phi commune (Tri Ton district), the youth union coordinated with the secondary school to inform about a number of drowning accidents, warning students about the causes and risks of drowning when swimming in ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, etc. The students were instructed on measures to prevent drowning and initial first aid skills. During the propaganda session, there was also a question and answer session for students to exchange and answer, consolidate knowledge, creating an exciting and lively atmosphere.
In addition to awareness, equipping children with swimming skills is the most necessary thing to prevent drowning. The Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of An Giang province supports the equipment of 24 mobile swimming cages to organize swimming lessons for children and billboards to prevent drowning in border districts and difficult mountainous areas, with a total cost of more than 1 billion VND. Currently, departments and branches continue to maintain the organization of competitions, playgrounds, and training courses on drowning prevention for children every year.
Deputy Director of the Center for Culture, Sports and Broadcasting of Long Xuyen City, Phan Vinh Trung, said that since the beginning of the year, the unit has coordinated with the Department of Education and Training to organize 8 extracurricular swimming classes for 1,000 children in schools. This summer alone, the center opened 2 swimming classes for students from poor households and households with difficult circumstances to attend, in order to equip them with additional skills to prevent drowning and improve their health.
Similarly, in localities in the province, as soon as the school year ends, many swimming classes are organized and parents in the area are mobilized to bring their children to participate. From June 12, the Center for Culture - Sports and Broadcasting of Chau Doc City in coordination with the Department of Education and Training opened the first swimming class to prevent drowning for children. The class is completely free and there will be a second class, lasting until August 18. Children are equipped with basic knowledge and instructed by coaches on safety skills in the water environment, some common swimming styles, and how to handle dangerous situations that may occur while swimming.
As part of the series of activities responding to the Month of Action for Children and Summer Activities this year, Chau Thanh and Phu Tan districts launched a movement for the whole population to practice swimming to prevent drowning. At the same time, they organized swimming competitions, drowning rescue, popularized swimming, safe swimming, and drowning prevention for children. In Chau Phu district, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to organize the launching ceremony of "All people practice swimming in An Giang province in 2023" and "Swimming, diving and drowning rescue competition in An Giang province".
“Swimming is a water sport that is being strongly developed in the Mekong Delta region in general and An Giang in particular. In recent years, the province has implemented a swimming popularization program quite well, contributing to reducing drowning accidents for children in rivers, canals and areas with frequent floods. Swimming popularization classes and swimming competitions have been organized and maintained, attracting a large number of children to participate in swimming practice.
This year’s event continues to aim to raise awareness and responsibility of the whole society for the protection, care and education of children. At the same time, mobilize the whole population to actively practice swimming… equipping knowledge and skills to prevent and avoid drowning and rescue children and the community” - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Dao Si Tuan shared.
