Laparoscopic surgery to obtain a liver transplant from a living donor not only brings great benefits to the recipient but is also a humane solution, protecting the health and spirit of the donor.
Recently, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City (UMPH) performed a liver transplant to save the lives of two young patients. These two patients suffered from end-stage liver disease with serious symptoms such as jaundice, infection, vomiting blood and frequent hospitalization. After consultation, the doctors concluded that liver transplantation was the only method that could save the lives and improve the quality of life of the two children. The two fathers decided to donate their livers to their children. Thanks to the laparoscopic technique, they only had to undergo small incisions, were less painful and recovered quickly.

After 4-5 days, the two fathers were discharged from the hospital and continued to care for their children. This success not only saved the lives of the two children but also created strong confidence in modern liver transplant techniques in Vietnam.
Dr. Tran Cong Duy Long, Head of the Hepatobiliary Cancer and Liver Transplant Unit, University Medical Center, shared: "We aim to provide the safest organ donation process for donors, helping them return to normal life quickly without having to worry about long-term sequelae."
Dr. Duy Long said that one of the notable benefits of laparoscopic surgery is aesthetics. Small incisions help minimize post-operative scarring, allowing donors to feel confident and comfortable mentally and physically. For many people, especially young people, not having to carry a long scar on their body is an important factor when deciding to donate a liver.
Furthermore, thanks to strict control and modern equipment, laparoscopic surgery significantly reduces the risk of complications and postoperative complications compared to open surgery.
Dr. Duy Long shared: "We want to bring the gentlest and safest process for donors, while encouraging the spirit of sharing in the community. The success of the laparoscopic liver transplant technique lies not only in its medical value but also in its profound humanitarian meaning, motivating many people to participate in organ donation and save the lives of their loved ones...".
On November 21-23, the 2024 National Scientific Conference on Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery with the theme "Sharing knowledge, shaping the future" took place in Ho Chi Minh City. The conference was organized by the Vietnam Association of Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery in collaboration with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City. The conference attracted nearly 2,000 delegates, including leading experts from home and abroad, with more than 400 scientific reports focusing on advances in surgical treatment and minimally invasive surgery.
One of the highlights of the conference was the demonstration of laparoscopic surgery to remove liver grafts from living donors. This method not only brings great benefits to the recipient but is also a humane solution, protecting the health and spirit of the donor, thereby spreading the spirit of mutual love in the community.
