France urges citizens to leave Lebanon 'as soon as possible'

On August 4, the French Foreign Ministry called on French citizens in Lebanon to leave the Middle Eastern country "as soon as possible", amid growing concerns about an all-out war between Israel and the Hezbollah movement as well as concerns about a wider conflict in the region.

In the advisory, the French Foreign Ministry stated: "In the context of many security fluctuations, we once again call on French citizens to note that there are still direct commercial flights as well as flights to France, and we recommend that citizens arrange their flight schedules now to leave Lebanon as soon as possible."

The French Foreign Ministry also "urgently requested" its citizens not to travel to Lebanon due to concerns about the risk of conflict in the region after Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran on July 31 - a day after an Israeli airstrike in Beirut killed a senior military commander of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Mr. Fuad Shukr.

France estimates that there are currently around 23,000 of its citizens in Lebanon. Around 10,000 French citizens arrived in the country in July alone.

The latest move by the French Foreign Ministry is similar to the US and UK, which on August 3 advised their citizens to leave Lebanon. Sweden also announced on August 3 that it would close its embassy in Beirut and called on its citizens to leave Lebanon.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated following the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran. Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of carrying out the assassination and vowed to retaliate. Israel has denied the accusation.

Regarding the regional situation, Iranian state media reported that Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi will arrive in Iran on August 4, in a rare visit to discuss with his host counterpart about regional developments following the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran.

The visit by Jordan's foreign minister comes after the US and its partners - including France, Britain, Italy and Egypt - have held continuous diplomatic contacts to prevent escalating tensions in the region.
