OpenAI files trademark application in China

Based on records on the website of the Trademark Office of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), OpenAI has registered GPT-6 and GPT-7 in class 9 (for apparatus and instruments used for scientific or research purposes) and class 42 (technology services and designs). OpenAI's application is currently under review by the agency.

Although OpenAI does not have any officially released services in China, the company is working to expand its influence in the AI ​​market. In April, OpenAI filed trademark applications for “GPT-4” and “Whisper,” and then applied for a trademark for “GPT-5” in July. However, neither trademark has been approved by the CNIPA.

OpenAI confirms GPT-5 is in development

In the year since ChatGPT was released, OpenAI has continued to improve its capabilities and its large language model (LLM). ChatGPT was originally built on GPT-3.5, which had 175 billion parameters. In March, OpenAI released GPT-4, but did not disclose how many parameters it had. According to Semafor, the total number of parameters for GPT-4 is estimated to be more than 1,000 billion.

In an interview with the Financial Times in November, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company was developing GPT-5 and planned to raise additional funding from Microsoft to support its research. The announcement came just days before OpenAI’s board of directors fired Altman. Altman was reinstated as CEO after just five days, following protests from investors and the company’s more than 700 employees.

One of the reasons behind the board's shocking decision is said to be that some researchers are concerned that the development of powerful AI could pose a threat to humanity. After returning to the company, Sam Altman stated that OpenAI's top priority is to advance its research agenda while also working to develop safe AI.
