(CLO) US President Donald Trump called himself "King" in a social media post after blocking a congestion charge law in New York.
"CONSTRUCTION TOLL IS DEAD. Manhattan and all of New York is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING," Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform on Wednesday.
The official White House accounts on X, Instagram and Facebook were quick to quote the statement, sharing an illustration of a magazine cover featuring Mr Trump in a suit and a gold crown studded with precious stones. The corner of the cover reads: "LONG LIVE THE KING".
The photo was shared by the White House on its official X account.
The White House's spreading of images of Mr. Trump as a king immediately sparked strong reactions from officials and people.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul dismissed the claim, asserting at a press conference on Wednesday: "New York has not had a king in over 250 years and certainly will not have one now." At the same time, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker stressed: "We do not have a king in America, and I will not kneel to anyone."
Mr. Trump's actions came as he issued more than 60 executive orders in just the first month of his second term, including controversial directives such as firing all US attorneys appointed by the previous administration.
He also signed an executive order declaring that only the president and attorney general have the authority to interpret the laws of independent agencies such as the Federal Communications Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
On social media, while some supporters praised the image of "King Trump", many others, including voters who voted for him, expressed dissatisfaction with this expression.
