However, Mr. Trump also emphasized that the world's largest economy still needs all goods.
Earlier, in March 2025, the head of the White House applied a 25% tariff on all imported aluminum and steel starting March 12, declaring no exceptions or exemptions. He pledged that this effort would help boost production and bring more jobs back to the US.
The 25% tariff on cars and pharmaceuticals will take effect from April 2.
In Mr. Trump's view, there is unequal treatment aimed at American cars exported to foreign markets.
For example, the European Union (EU) imposes a 10% tariff on imported cars, four times higher than the US tariff of 2.5%.
For pharmaceuticals, tariffs would start at “25% or higher and would increase gradually over a period of one year.”
However, the US President has not given a specific timeline for imposing pharmaceutical tariffs, while pointing out that he wants pharmaceutical manufacturers to have more time to open domestic factories and avoid tariffs.
On the same day, March 24, at a press conference, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick revealed that April 2 - the date of application of the tariff policy - is also the launch date of the "Overseas Internal Revenue Service" (ERS).
In this country, the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is responsible for collecting domestic taxes.
