Chi Pu has successfully raised her status in China and regained the sympathy of Vietnamese audiences after the success of Dap Gio 2023. However, these days, the female singer is suspected of lip-syncing in China.
The Chinese entertainment market has always been strict with lip-syncing. Therefore, many audiences are worried that the current incident may affect Chi Pu's future activities in the larger market.
Chi Pu's efforts
Chi Pu's singing voice is not excellent, even quite weak. That is something that the audience has been arguing about for a long time and perhaps Chi Pu is well aware of that. However, it cannot be denied that Chi Pu has tried very hard during her years of singing.
Practice hard to improve your singing voice and make up for your shortcomings with meticulous choreography, creative and novel ideas, and an invested stage.
That was clearly demonstrated by Chi Pu in Dap Gio 2023 - a famous Chinese program. Coming to the program as a newcomer, even very little known in China, Chi Pu was not expected much.
Initially, most Vietnamese audiences predicted that she would not be able to advance to the final round because her competitors were all famous Chinese stars. However, Chi Pu has continuously surprised.
From the skirt-tugging scene in the first round to the moments of swinging on ropes and somersaulting high above, Chi Pu proved that she always invested 100% of her energy and enthusiasm into each performance as if it was her last time performing on the Dap Gio stage.
The female singer lights up the stage from her appearance to her performance skills. Therefore, although her voice is still weak and out of tune when singing high notes, the audience still happily overlooked it and enthusiastically voted to send Chi Pu through from one round to the next.
And then, finally, the singer of Rose finished 6th in the final round of Dap Gio 2023 and was one of 11 beautiful ladies to debut after the show along with Ella, Amber, Maria, Ta Na, Chu Chau, Chi Pu, Luu Tich Quan, A-Lin, Lu Tinh San, Cung Lam Na, and Gia Tinh Van.
Unnecessary controversy
The success of Dap Gio has almost brought Chi Pu to a new page in her singing career. Her career is wide open, she has a large fan base and continuously participates in major entertainment and television programs in China.
In Vietnam, Chi Pu is also gradually being recognized. Audiences have changed their views on Chi Pu after a long time of prejudice about her weak voice and her off-key singing.
Unfortunately, at a time when her career was clearly on the rise, Chi Pu was caught up in a lip-syncing controversy. This was also the reason why Chi Pu had been criticized many times in Vietnam before. Also because of causing so many controversies for the same reason, her singing voice, after many years, Chi Pu still has not been recognized as a singer by a part of the audience.
Recently, Chi Pu was suspected of lip-syncing at the 2023 Asian Youth Music Festival (AYMF). When Chi Pu's mouth shape did not match the lyrics, many Chinese audiences criticized the female singer for lip-syncing, while others thought she was just covering the lyrics.
The incident at AYMF has not yet subsided when recently Chinese media continued to point out that Chi Pu was one of 41 artists lip-syncing at the Hunan TV music festival broadcast on November 11.
Chi Pu was the only Vietnamese artist to attend the event, alongside hundreds of Chinese stars, making fans proud. However, the audience pointed out that the female singer did not sing live.
Chi Pu performed with Ly Tu Dan Ny, Vuong Phi Phi, Truong Ham Van and all of them were pointed out by 163 for lip-syncing. Other stars such as Ngo Can Ngon, Dang An Hy, Tong Thien, Luu Dao, Thanh Nghi, Tan Lam, Thua Loi... were also named. Both Chi Pu and the remaining 40 artists were criticized.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Lin, Chu Wah Kien, Huang Yi San, the duo Phoenix Legend, Zhou Shen, Hua Chen Yu... were highly appreciated when singing live.
Sina newspaper commented: “Hunan TV used pre-recorded versions, either in whole or in part, to confuse the audience. It is very difficult to determine which is real singing and which is lip-syncing. However, some professional bloggers have seen the clues and listed in detail the list of singers who sang for real or lip-synced during the concert.”
If a singer is not qualified to perform on stage, he should give the opportunity to a more capable singer. Such misappropriation of resources is not advisable, Sina emphasized.
“Li Si Dan Ni, Wang Fei Fei, Zhang Han Yun and Chi Pu performed the opening act. As the opening act, they chose to lip-sync to stabilize the performance, but after all, they are all experienced in Pretty Sister Who Makes Waves, unexpectedly they all chose to lip-sync, it is indeed a bit disappointing,” read an article on Sina.
Meanwhile, Laitimes wrote: “After watching the show, some viewers called on the management agency to impose stricter regulations on lip-syncing, because after all, this is no different from fraud and is really shameful.”
Meanwhile, Sohu gave a different perspective. “In fact, as the program editor said before, in order to ensure that such a large-scale music party goes smoothly, the production team may ask celebrities to lip-sync. Sometimes lip-syncing is actually the last resort. Unless lip-syncing in a private concert, it will really make fans feel creepy.”
