The report reveals that N VIDIA 's first Arm-based CPU could launch in 2025. AMD is also designing an Arm-based processor and could launch it around the same time as N VIDIA 's CPU.
Nvidia and AMD to launch Arm-based CPUs by 2025
In 2016, Microsoft announced a deal with Qualcomm to develop Arm-based CPUs running Windows 10. Qualcomm has an exclusive agreement to manufacture CPUs based on Arm technology for Windows PCs until 2024.
That may be why both N VIDIA and AMD, companies that previously made GPUs (graphics processors) for Windows PCs, want to use Arm technology to enter the PC CPU manufacturing business by 2025. While AMD has been making x86-based CPUs for PCs for decades, N VIDIA is a newcomer to the field.
The efforts by Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm could have a big impact on the PC industry, where Intel has long dominated and is facing increasing competition from Apple, whose custom chips have given Mac computers better battery life and higher performance.
According to Reuters, executives at Microsoft have seen how well Apple's Arm-based chips perform, including in AI (artificial intelligence) processing, and Microsoft wants to achieve similar performance.
Microsoft is encouraging chipmakers to integrate advanced AI capabilities into the CPUs they design. The company believes that AI-enhanced software like Copilot will become an increasingly important part of using Windows. To make that happen, upcoming chips from Nvidia, AMD, and others will need to invest more resources. Intel has also built AI capabilities into its chips, and recently showed off a laptop that runs ChatGPT-like features directly on the device.
