In the fields of Lua village (Doan Thuong commune), mixed with the fields that have been tilled and are waiting to be planted with the new rice crop, there are also vegetable fields that are growing well. Since the afternoon of the first day of Tet, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tinh and his wife have been in the fields "opening the spring" to harvest green cauliflower. Mr. Tinh transported these vegetables to Hoi Do wholesale market (Hai Duong city) to deliver to traders that same night.
While loading vegetables onto the truck, Mr. Tinh shared: "Taking advantage of the late afternoon of the first day of Tet, my wife and I went to the field to harvest because the vegetables were ready to be sold. If we don't harvest them early, the dry sun will make the vegetables swell and make them difficult to sell. These days, the number of people selling vegetables is low while the demand is high, so we can sell them at a slightly higher price."
Mr. Tinh added that a few months ago, his family harvested a crop of garlic from this vegetable field. In general, each sao can grow winter vegetables at least twice, and after deducting expenses, the farmer earns a profit of 5-6 million VND.
Like Mr. Tinh's family, since the afternoon of the first day of Tet, some farmers in Gia Loc district have gone to the fields to harvest vegetables and check the fields. While harvesting cabbage, Ms. Doan Thi Yen in Bui village (Le Loi commune) said that this vegetable field was bought by her daughter before Tet for 6.5 million VND. The cabbage was already full, so taking advantage of the afternoon of the first day of Tet, after everything to welcome the new year was finished, Ms. Yen's family went to the field to harvest vegetables. "My family of 3 only took 2 hours to harvest this vegetable field. The vegetables are packed in 20 kg plastic bags, then transferred to the wholesale market or sold to traders to transport to the South for more than 100,000 VND/bag. Although the work is busy, it still brings a significant income for us farmers," Ms. Yen said.
According to statistics from Gia Loc District People's Committee, this winter crop, the district has planted 2,940 hectares of vegetables, exceeding the plan by about 140 hectares. By January 29 (the first day of Tet), farmers had harvested 82% of the winter vegetable area, reaching a value of 155 million VND/ha. Taking advantage of favorable weather, farmers have planted 200 hectares of spring vegetables. The district has flooded nearly 2,760 hectares, reaching 76.5% of the area, farmers have sown 20 hectares of seedlings on hard ground...
In recent years, agricultural production has been the main source of income for many families in Gia Loc, so farmers are attached to their fields. With the hope that the new year will bring a bumper crop, farmers here have gone to the fields early to pray for favorable weather, high agricultural productivity, and a stable market...
This year, Gia Loc farmers strive to cultivate all rice fields, continue to expand vegetable fields, and actively seek to add high-yield, high-quality, short-term varieties to their crops to further increase the value of agricultural land.
