According to PhoneArena , Nokia is leading the way in mobile network innovation and will soon become the first company to deploy a 4G network on the Moon through a partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This is achieved through the Intuitive Machines-2 (IM-2) mission that NASA is deploying to the south pole of the Moon , where Nokia will establish the first mobile network here.
IM-2 mission trajectory
A few days ago, Intuitive Machines' Athena lander, carrying Nokia's networking equipment, was launched into space on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. IM-2 shared images from the Athena lander showing the process of establishing stability, solar charging, and radio communication with the operations center in Houston, Texas (USA).
Nokia is ready for a historic move
About a week after launch, Athena is expected to enter low lunar orbit. After completing several orbits, it will land and the IM-2 mission will officially begin operations. The 4G/LTE network deployed by Nokia is specifically designed for the mission’s needs, with the goal of connecting Athena to two vehicles on the lunar surface: the MAPP rover and the Micro Nova Hopper drone.
Immediately after landing, Nokia will activate its Lunar Surface Communications System (LSCS). The company will use Intuitive Machines' direct link to Earth to remotely monitor and power Athena's built-in "network in a box" (NIB).
Nokia hopes everything goes according to plan
Once the tests are complete, NIB will establish the first cellular link to the instrument module on the MAPP rover, which remains aboard the Athena spacecraft. This will be the first cellular call on the Moon, according to Nokia.
As MAPP and Hopper explore the lunar surface, Nokia will monitor and evaluate the performance of the network to make necessary adjustments. All the data collected will help the company refine the network design and deployment for future missions. In addition to the main mission, the goal of LSCS is to demonstrate how cellular technology can be used on future space missions, and Nokia hopes everything goes according to plan.
