The US continues to coordinate with two mediators Egypt and Qatar to propose amendments to the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, while the Arab League (AL) expressed dissatisfaction with the West's view on the conflict in this land.

On September 16, Reuters news agency quoted US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller as saying that Washington is currently studying a new compromise proposal on a ceasefire in Gaza “to fill the remaining gaps” to “create conditions for the parties to reach a final agreement.”

According to spokesman Miller, although there is no schedule for the proposed amendment that has been awaited for the past few weeks, Washington wants to ensure that this document becomes a proposal that can bring Israel and Hamas towards a final agreement.

US officials have assured that the two sticking points remain the Philadelphia Corridor - the southern Gaza Strip bordering Egypt that Israel wants to retain control over, as well as details regarding the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel following new demands from the Hamas movement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted that his country needs to maintain control of the Philadelphia Corridor, a claim that Egypt and other countries oppose.

According to Mr. Miller, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Egypt from September 17-19 to co-chair the US-Egypt Strategic Dialogue with his host counterpart Badr Abdelatty.

During the visit, the two foreign ministers will discuss efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, with the aim of "ensuring the release of hostages, alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people and contributing to the establishment of broader regional security".

Cairo is a key ally of Washington and plays a key role in the ceasefire negotiations in the Palestinian territories.

This is Secretary of State Blinken's 10th trip to the region, especially after the US government last week decided to disburse the entire military aid package worth about 1.3 billion USD for Egypt, without setting any conditions.

Regarding the conflict in the Gaza Strip, on the same day, Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Ahmed Aboul-Gheit warned that the West's "tolerant" stance towards the crisis in this Mediterranean coastal strip could seriously affect the stability of the Middle East region.

According to the AL statement, Mr. Aboul-Gheit made the above comment during a meeting with the United Nations (UN) Special Coordinator in charge of the Middle East peace process Tor Wennesland in Cairo (Egypt).

Secretary-General Aboul-Gheit and Special Coordinator Wennesland agreed on the need to combine humanitarian efforts with a political process to resolve the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

The two sides also discussed future diplomatic steps to move the two-state solution from “words and intentions into action and implementation.”

Mr. Aboul-Gheit noted that the political process needs to continue on all fronts, especially at the United Nations and the United Nations Security Council.
