Speaking at a press conference the same day at the National Palace of Mexico, President Sheinbaum said that a detailed plan regarding tariff response measures will be announced at noon on March 9, during an event at Zocalo Square, downtown Mexico City.
Previously, according to President Donald Trump's decree, starting from 0:00 on March 4 (American time), all goods from Mexico and Canada entering the US will be subject to a new import tax. Specifically, energy products from Canada will be subject to a 10% tax, and those from Mexico will be subject to a 25% tax. Other products from these two countries will be subject to a 25% tax.
In her statement on Mexico City's stance, Ms. Sheinbaum asserted that Washington had no legitimate reason to impose tariffs on Mexican exports, stressing that the move would harm both countries.
"All this time we have always sought solutions through dialogue, on the basis of respecting national sovereignty.
However, the decision to impose unilateral taxes by the world's largest economy not only negatively impacts domestic and international businesses operating in Mexico, but also directly affects people's lives.
Therefore, Mexico has decided to apply tariff and non-tariff measures to protect national interests," the leader stated.
Still, President Sheinbaum said her country will continue to maintain dialogue with the Trump administration.
Affirming that Mexico is a strong and resilient nation, the President called on all Mexicans to remain calm and united in the face of upcoming challenges.
Speaking about the impact of imposing tariffs on US imports from Mexico, Ms. Sheinbaum emphasized that this decision will not only increase the price of goods but also seriously affect employment in both countries.
