Cases of extra points for 10th grade entrance exam

The Ministry of Education and Training stipulates an incentive bonus of 0.5 - 1.5 points for excellent students who win provincial-level prizes organized by the Department of Education and Training or in coordination with departments and branches organized on a provincial scale for competitions organized at the national level.


The circular promulgating the regulations on junior high school and high school admissions recently issued by the Ministry of Education and Training has changed the bonus point policy for students taking the entrance exam for public 10th grade.

From 2025, excellent provincial students will have extra points to enter grade 10.

Accordingly, in addition to priority policy subjects, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates an incentive bonus of 0.5 - 1.5 points for excellent students who win provincial-level prizes organized by the Department of Education and Training or in coordination with departments and branches organized on a provincial scale for competitions organized at the national level.

Specifically, first prize winners will receive 1.5 points, second prize winners will receive 1 point, and third prize winners will receive 0.5 points. The incentive points will be added to the total admission score calculated on a 10-point scale for each subject and exam.

In previous years, the Ministry of Education and Training did not allow additional points for students who won provincial or city prizes.

Candidates admitted directly to grade 10

In addition, the circular also stipulates the direct admission policy and priority admission regime in grade 10 admission.

Candidates eligible for direct admission include:

Students of secondary boarding schools for ethnic minorities; students from very small ethnic minorities; students with disabilities.

Secondary school students who win national prizes organized by the Ministry of Education and Training or in coordination with ministries and ministerial-level agencies on a national scale for competitions, examinations, and contests on culture, arts, sports; and scientific and technical research competitions.

Secondary school students who won prizes in international competitions are selected by the Minister of Education and Training.

3 groups of subjects are given priority points

Priority points are added to the total admission score calculated on a 10-point scale for each exam subject. Group 1: 2 points added; Group 2: 1.5 points added; Group 3: 1 point added.

Group 1 includes: children of martyrs; children of war invalids with a working capacity loss of 81% or more; children of sick soldiers with a working capacity loss of 81% or more; children of people granted a "Certificate of beneficiaries of policies for war invalids whose working capacity loss is 81% or more"; children of resistance fighters infected with toxic chemicals; children of revolutionary fighters before January 1, 1945; children of revolutionary fighters from January 1, 1945 to the August 1945 uprising.

Group 2: children of Armed Forces Heroes, children of Labor Heroes, children of heroic Vietnamese mothers; children of war invalids with less than 81% loss of working capacity; children of sick soldiers with less than 81% loss of working capacity; children of people granted "Certificate of beneficiaries of policies for war invalids, where the person granted the Certificate of beneficiaries of policies for war invalids has a reduced working capacity of less than 81%.

Group 3: people whose parents are ethnic minorities; ethnic minorities; students in areas with especially difficult socio-economic conditions.

The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee is responsible for approving the high school enrollment plan, including the following basic contents: enrollment subjects; enrollment quotas and locations; enrollment methods; direct, priority, and incentive enrollment regimes; enrollment review time and announcement of enrollment results. The high school enrollment plan is announced before March 31 every year.

The Ministry of Education and Training said that before issuing this circular, the ministry had sent it to 63 Departments of Education and Training and high schools nationwide to get opinions on some contents of the circular; and collected opinions from nearly 9,000 secondary education institutions in 63 provinces and cities.

During the consultation process, the Ministry of Education and Training received comments from the Departments of Education and Training, schools, experts, teachers, students, parents and the whole society. The proposal to give bonus points to excellent students at the provincial level received comments from many Departments of Education and Training to encourage students with excellent academic abilities.
