(NLDO) - Originating from the class model to solve the requirement of teaching elective subjects, "running" classes in Ho Chi Minh City are increasingly being replicated.
From the 2022-2023 school year, Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted (District 5) is the first school in Ho Chi Minh City to implement the "running" classroom model. Up to now, many high schools in the city have replicated this model, both to meet the requirements of teaching elective subjects according to the 2018 General Education Program and to anticipate the graduation exam.
Students have many choices.
According to high school leaders, since the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program, in addition to compulsory subjects, students admitted to grade 10 are forced to choose elective subject combinations arranged by the school. This leads to a situation where many students do not like to study some subjects but have no other choice. Therefore, the training results are not as expected because students do not have a passion for learning.
From this reality, some high schools have implemented "running" classes in the form of, in addition to compulsory subjects, students will be "running" to classes teaching elective subjects that they like to study, and can choose to study 2-3 subjects from the elective subjects according to the style of studying whatever they like.
Students are advised on elective subjects in grade 10 at Ten Lo Man High School (District 1)
At Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, in addition to 8 compulsory subjects and educational activities, students can choose 4 subjects and 3 specialized topics. Based on the students' subject choices, the school will arrange the timetable in the direction that in the morning, students will study compulsory subjects and specialized subjects according to their classes. In the afternoon, students will switch to studying with other students according to the elective subjects and registered topics.
Mr. Trinh Duy Trong, Principal of Truong Chinh High School (District 12), said that starting from the 2024-2025 school year, the school will implement classes in the above form for 10th grade students. Organizing this model is to give students more choices, in the direction that best suits them. The school offers many subject combinations for students to choose from.
Suitable for graduation exam method
Originating from "necessity is the mother of invention", the "running" classes in Ho Chi Minh City prove their suitability and effectiveness with the high school graduation exam method from 2025.
To meet all students' needs for the two optional subjects for the graduation exam, schools often organize "running" classes in the afternoon. This means that students do not study in a fixed class but can move to another class to study the subject they have chosen for the graduation exam.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc, Principal of Duong Van Thi High School (Thu Duc City), said that when building the group, the school divided it into two main groups: natural sciences and social sciences, because the high school graduation exam in 2025 will only have 4 subjects. At Duong Van Thi High School, based on the 2 years of students choosing and organizing teaching, based on the number of teachers and the rate of registered students, the school changes the groups to be more suitable. Students in the same group will be given priority to be placed in the same class.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Thao, Vice Principal of Nguyen Trung Truc High School (Go Vap District), the school also allows students to register for elective subjects at the beginning of the school year. After students register for subjects, the school re-arranges classes in the second session to suit each student's wishes. According to statistics, the combination of math, literature, physics, and English; Math, literature, physics, and chemistry is chosen by many students because it is applied to many different majors. Economic and legal education has students choosing it but not many, while no students choose Technology and Information Technology.

At Ten Lo Man High School (District 1), according to Mr. Nguyen Hung Khuong, the school principal, the school does not have pre-set subject combinations like previous years, but students can choose 2-3 subjects according to their interests, abilities and wishes. This change is to help students be more proactive in determining their study path in 3 years of high school.
According to the Principal of Ten Lo Man High School, the 2025 high school graduation exam has 4 subjects, of which 2 subjects are compulsory: math and literature, the remaining 2 subjects are optional for students, so the school has built 3 groups of combinations: natural sciences, social sciences and combined groups... In which, each group will ensure 3 traditional exam blocks for admission to universities. This helps students diversify their admission combinations for professions and universities.
