Medical news on December 29: Many children were hospitalized due to improper use of Oresol

Improper use of Oresol can cause serious side effects and worsen a child's condition, according to warnings from doctors at the National Children's Hospital.

Hospitalized for improper use of Oresol

Recently, the Emergency and Poison Control Department of this hospital has received many cases of children being hospitalized due to acute diarrhea. A typical case is a 9-month-old boy in Hanoi, who was hospitalized in a state of severe dehydration and impaired consciousness.

Poisoned children are being treated at the National Children's Hospital.

Before being admitted to the hospital, the child was diagnosed with acute diarrhea and was prescribed home treatment. However, the family did not mix the Oresol in the correct ratio, using only half a packet of Oresol with 70ml of water instead of mixing it with 200ml of boiled and cooled water as instructed on the package.

After drinking, the baby's condition became serious. The baby was admitted to the Emergency Department in a lethargic state with impaired consciousness. Tests showed that the baby had severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and hypernatremia (high salt content in the blood).

Immediately, the doctors performed rehydration and electrolyte adjustment for the baby. After more than a week of treatment, the baby's health stabilized and he was discharged from the hospital.

Specialist II Doctor Nguyen Tan Hung, Deputy Head of the Department of Emergency and Poison Control, said that acute diarrhea is a condition of having loose stools more than three times a day. This is a common disease in children and is one of the leading causes of death in children under 5 years old in developing countries.

The cause of acute diarrhea is often viruses such as Rotavirus, Enterovirus, Norovirus, Adenovirus... In addition, it can also be caused by bacteria, parasites, unsanitary diet, or drug allergies.

Typical symptoms of the disease include dehydration, with signs such as thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, dry lips, sunken eyes, and weight loss. If not treated promptly, it can lead to electrolyte disturbances, hypovolemic shock, infection, multiple organ failure, and even death.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung, Oresol is an electrolyte solution that helps to effectively replenish water and electrolytes, and is recommended for children who are dehydrated and lose electrolytes due to diarrhea, high fever, etc.

However, the effectiveness of Oresol is only achieved when mixed in the correct proportions. Mistakes in mixing, such as mixing too strong or too weak, can cause serious electrolyte disturbances, even brain damage or death in young children.

To use Oresol properly, parents need to follow these principles: Read the mixing instructions on the package carefully, and never estimate the dosage.

Mix one packet of Oresol with 200ml of water, do not use an inaccurate measuring device. Give the child Oresol by the spoonful (for young children) or by the sip (for older children).

Use the solution within 24 hours of mixing. To prevent acute diarrhea, parents should note: Breastfeed your baby for at least the first 6 months of life.

Ensure food and drinking water safety. Wash children and caregivers' hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet.

Keep the living environment clean and use clean water. Provide adequate nutrition for children and vaccinate them with vaccines such as Rotavirus.

Medical experts recommend that not all cases of acute diarrhea require hospitalization. For children with mild diarrhea, families can care for them at home under the guidance of a doctor.

However, if the child has symptoms such as high fever that persists and does not respond to antipyretics, vomiting and frequent bowel movements during the day, thirst, poor appetite, bloody stools, bloating, fussiness, etc., the child should be taken to a medical facility immediately for examination and timely treatment.

Correct use of Oresol is very important in treating acute diarrhea and helping to protect children's health. Parents need to pay close attention to avoid serious errors when using this medicine.

Risk of chemical poisoning in children

Hue Central Hospital has just announced the discharge of patient PTQ, 8 years old, residing in Vinh Ha commune, Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province, after being successfully treated for Abamectin poisoning.

This is a bacterial pesticide, commonly used in agriculture to kill plant pests such as brown planthoppers, leaf rollers, stem borers, and stink bugs.

Previously, baby Q. mistakenly drank Abamectin contained in a bottle of Number 1 soft drink, leading to a critical condition: cyanosis, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and a very high risk of death.

Doctor CKII Nguyen Thi Diem Chi, Deputy Director of the Pediatric Center, Hue Central Hospital, said that Abamectin works by inhibiting neurotransmission through the GABA receptor, which can cause serious effects on the nervous system and heart and lungs, for which there is currently no antidote. When poisoned with Abamectin, the victim will experience symptoms such as vomiting, convulsions, deep coma, slow heart rate, respiratory failure, and if not treated promptly, there is a risk of death.

He also warned about Abamectin poisoning in countries with developed agriculture, especially in Asia. The doctor stressed the need to raise awareness about the risks of this pesticide and warned parents not to mix pesticides and herbicides in eye-catching plastic bottles that can easily confuse children, as well as to ensure that they are out of reach of children to avoid unfortunate accidents.

Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health also announced that Binh Chanh District Hospital received 5 cases of suspected poisoning from PAC (Poly Aluminium Chloride), a type of alum used in water filtration systems. PAC can increase water clarity, prolong the filtration cycle and improve water quality, but if it comes into contact with the human body, especially through inhalation or ingestion, it will be dangerous.

Chemical poisoning can occur in everyday life through exposure to detergents, herbicides, pesticides, or industrial chemicals.

Symptoms of chemical poisoning vary widely, from agitation, convulsions, coma to respiratory arrest and death if not treated promptly. These cases require prompt emergency treatment to minimize harm and save the victim's life.

Health experts recommend that when using chemicals in the home or on the farm, special care should be taken, keeping them out of reach of children and ensuring that all toxic substances are stored safely.

Awake brain surgery with AI robot: Saving patients' lives, reducing risks

Mr. Tri, 39 years old, suddenly had a severe headache during a meeting at the office. Trying to return home, he went to the break room by himself, but after a few hours, his wife discovered that he was slurring his words, paralyzed on one side, and unable to stand up.

Immediately, the family called an ambulance and he was taken to the hospital. There, doctors quickly determined that he had suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke, with a high risk of death or permanent paralysis if not treated promptly.

When admitted to the hospital, Mr. Tri had high blood pressure of 170/110 mmHg, and left hemiplegia of up to 80%. Doctors quickly activated the stroke emergency procedure (Stroke Code), performed an emergency MRI, and discovered a hematoma of about 30 ml in the right temporal region, compressing healthy brain tissue and nerve fiber bundles.

According to Master, Doctor, Specialist II Chu Tan Si, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Tam Anh General Hospital, if not surgically intervened immediately, the hematoma would cause more serious damage, threatening the patient's ability to move and speak. Therefore, the doctor decided to perform an emergency surgery, using the AI Modus V Synaptive robot, to help preserve neurological function and save the patient's life.

What is special about this surgery is the use of awake brain surgery - a modern technique in neurosurgery, in which the patient remains awake and can interact with the doctor throughout the surgery.

This is a method recommended by the World Stroke Organization for the treatment of hemorrhagic stroke, helping doctors check and ensure that important functional areas of the brain are not damaged, while reducing the risk of infection and complications from anesthesia.

Before starting, the medical team uses the AI robot's simulation software to determine the exact location and surgical method. Using a robotic arm with a microsurgical microscope that can automatically move and focus in 3D, the doctor approaches the hematoma in the patient's brain from many different angles.

The robot system continuously sends warning signals, helping doctors make timely adjustments when there are deviations during surgery, ensuring absolute safety for healthy brain tissue and nerve fibers.

The surgery is performed in about 40 minutes, an hour faster than the traditional method, helping to minimize damage to the patient.

After surgery, Mr. Tri was awake, the surgical wound was dry and clean, and he did not need to stay in the recovery room. This is one of the great benefits of awake brain surgery, helping to reduce the risk of pneumonia and infection, while helping the patient recover quickly.

The AI Modus V Synaptive robotic brain surgery technique has been deployed at this Hospital since 2023. After one year of application, this system has successfully performed more than 100 surgeries for patients with brain tumors, spinal cord tumors and hemorrhagic stroke.

This is a big step forward in applying modern technology to medicine, bringing high efficiency in saving patients' lives and minimizing risks from complicated surgeries.

Doctors recommend that patients with cerebral hemorrhage need emergency treatment within the "golden hour" (first 6-8 hours) to optimize the chance of recovery, while also affirming the need for early detection and treatment of the disease to prevent risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

According to Dr. Tan Si, the method of awake brain surgery combined with AI robots is a significant step forward in medicine, not only helping to save patients' lives but also minimizing dangerous complications after surgery. This is one of the solutions to help improve the survival rate and recovery ability of patients with cerebral hemorrhage.
