Can't help but feel sad
After nearly 10 years of teaching literature at Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City), teacher Le Du Bang realized that AI helps students access information easily. However, he also worries: "I feel sad if students take my lectures lightly because they think AI is helping, and I am also afraid that if I don't update technology in time, I will fall behind."
This is a common concern of long-time teachers when it is difficult to access modern technology and teaching equipment, according to Master Vien Tuan Anh, physics teacher at Nguyen Thien Thanh High School for the Gifted (Tra Vinh province).
Older teachers also rarely apply new teaching methods but often maintain the traditional methods they have pursued for a long time.
AI will not completely replace the role of teachers but will be a tool to support teachers.
The concern that AI will negate the role of teachers in imparting knowledge was also raised by Nguyen Huu Hung (a student of the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City) at a discussion on challenges and opportunities for students in the digital age held last week. From his experience in tutoring, Hung said that students today can look up everything using AI without asking teachers.
Resolving the above confusion, Master Ngo Huu Thong, Permanent Deputy Director of the Institute for Applied Research and Business Innovation (3AI), affirmed that AI does not deny the role of teachers, but the way of conveying and approaching learners needs to change from providing knowledge to guiding students in selecting information and AI tools.
Although AI does not replace teachers, Ms. Tran Thi Kim Hoang, an English teacher at Nguyen Tat Thanh High School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) predicts that teachers may be eliminated by those in the industry who are proficient in using AI to solve problems.
On the other hand, some students who tutor believe that AI can only replace teachers to some extent. For example, Huynh Nguyen Gia Huy (a student majoring in natural science education at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) said that AI can grade multiple-choice tests, create lesson plans, design lectures, etc. to optimize time and effort. Nguyen Lam Nhat Minh (a student majoring in international business at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education) often uses AI to simulate online experiments in the 9th grade physics program.
AI is unlikely to replace a "true teacher"
The education sector is gradually applying AI to teaching, but it cannot completely replace the role of teachers in the "career of cultivating people". Teachers and pedagogical students all believe that on the emotional level, AI cannot compare to a "real" teacher. "AI can only replace teachers in terms of searching for and providing knowledge, but cannot replace the spiritual connection, teacher-student relationship or the infinite creativity of teachers", said Master Vien Tuan Anh.
Sharing the same opinion, Master Tran Thi Kim Hoang emphasized: "Things that come from the heart will reach the heart more easily than millions of results after each mouse 'click'. Moreover, AI does not have the ability to motivate, inspire or enlighten, leading students to explore in the right direction".
Thanks to AI, students can practice experiments through simulation applications.
Regarding literature, Nguyen Tran Anh Thu (a student majoring in literature pedagogy at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) said that AI cannot yet "touch" Vietnamese literature in terms of emotions and knowledge, so teachers of this subject still have a place. "Each teacher has their own teaching style and 'attraction'. AI only provides knowledge, teachers are the ones who bring emotions into the lecture and inspire love of literature in students," Thu shared.
From another perspective, Ms. Duong Thi Huynh, a biology teacher at Nguyen Thien Thanh High School for the Gifted (Tra Vinh province) believes that although AI does not have emotions and does not bring emotions like humans, it can support teachers in terms of skills, such as providing ways to adjust emotions when teaching, ways to understand students' emotions, etc.
In addition to the emotional factor, AI is not a "magic wand" that provides everything accurately, so students need teachers to support them in verifying information. For example, through the process of teaching physics, Nguyen Lam Nhat Minh assessed that most tools do not fully understand the Vietnamese curriculum, so the information will be incorrect. Minh's students also enjoy real experiments more than virtual experiments simulated by software.
Concern is the driving force for innovation
Concerns about the role of teachers in the AI era can be the driving force behind good teaching initiatives. Teachers believe that innovative teaching methods require time for teachers and students to adapt, as well as smooth coordination between teachers and students, and the orientation of the school and local education program.
According to Master Tran Thi Kim Hoang, with the support of AI, teachers will replace the method of cramming knowledge with superior methods, improving and perfecting methods to improve the quality of lectures.
Ms. Tran Thi Kim Hoang and her students' creative products
"It is important to understand each student's abilities and interests to build appropriate activities, help each student develop their abilities and support other students," said Ms. Hoang.
"Breaking new air" into the lessons
Mr. Le Du Bang, a teacher at Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City), emphasized that each lesson must arouse students' interest and promote the spirit of proactively acquiring knowledge.
"Teachers explain to students the role of AI instead of prohibiting its use. As a future teacher, I constantly update my digital skills to be confident in guiding students as well as cooperating with AI to reduce the burden of lesson preparation and 'breathe a new wind' into the lessons," Nguyen Tran Anh Thu (student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) shared.
