Patient D (in Dak Som commune, Dak Glong), while cutting grass, unfortunately the blade hit a rock, broke and flew up, deeply embedded in the left chest wall. The patient was taken to Dak Glong District General Hospital by his family in critical condition. Immediately, Dak Glong District General Hospital transferred the patient to the provincial General Hospital in a bad condition, shock, unmeasurable blood pressure, severe chest pain, continuous and increasing difficulty breathing.
After examination, ultrasound and X-ray, doctors at Dak Nong General Hospital determined that the patient had a metal object deeply embedded in the left chest wall, causing a large amount of pericardial effusion. Dak Nong General Hospital immediately activated the hospital-wide red alert, resuscitated, prepared blood, held an interdisciplinary consultation and performed emergency surgery on the patient.
After more than 3 hours of thoracotomy to remove the foreign object, relieve cardiac tamponade, and stop bleeding from the pericardial wound, the surgery was successful. During the thoracotomy to remove the foreign object, the patient was transfused with 1,000ml of blood from the hospital's blood reserve.
The patient is currently conscious, vital signs are stable, no pain or difficulty breathing, and eating well. This is considered a rare case of difficult survival at Dak Nong Provincial General Hospital.
