To minimize damage caused by severe cold to livestock and poultry, households in Vu Quang (Ha Tinh) have proactively implemented measures according to instructions from professional agencies.

People in the mountainous area of Vu Quang worry about keeping their livestock warm.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh's family (village 4, Tho Dien commune) proactively kept cows at home to avoid the cold.

In recent days, the temperature has dropped, so buffalo and cow farmers in the Tho Dien border commune have proactively kept their livestock at home, increased their food rations, and supplemented them with vitamins to increase their resistance.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh (village 4, Tho Dien commune) said: "This year, the cold spells came later than usual, but the temperature dropped quite a bit. Therefore, my family pays attention to taking care of the cows. Before hearing the announcement of this prolonged cold spell, my family moved 10 cows to raise at home. We also actively fattened them so that we could sell them in time for the Lunar New Year."

The total herd of buffalo and cows in Tho Dien commune currently reaches nearly 2,000.

Tho Dien is one of the localities that strongly raises buffalo and cows in Vu Quang district, with a total herd of nearly 2,000 animals. From experience from previous years, from the beginning of this winter, the commune has encouraged people to stockpile food for their livestock, taking advantage of available food sources such as bananas and grass to mix with starchy feed, helping the livestock grow healthily.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Nhan - Chairman of Tho Dien Commune People's Committee said: "In recent years, raising buffaloes and cows has brought people a good income, especially at the end of the year. Therefore, disease prevention and care have always been focused on by people and the locality. In order for livestock to grow healthily during low temperature days, the locality has directed professional staff to each village to instruct people on how to care for them, such as: using tarpaulin or nylon to cover barns; increasing food rations for livestock; absolutely not grazing on very cold days...".

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Men's buffalo herd (village 1, Quang Tho commune) is carefully raised at home on cold days.

In order to help livestock grow healthily in the cold weather and sell them in time for Tet, people in Quang Tho commune have also proactively covered their barns, stocked up on food and kept them at home.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Men (village 1, Quang Tho commune) shared: “Every year, my family maintains 8 to 10 buffaloes. Because of our experience in raising livestock, every winter, my family proactively repairs and upgrades the barns and carefully covers them with tarpaulins to keep the animals warm. In addition, my family also increases the food rations, especially for the weak ones; especially when the temperature drops sharply, we burn firewood to keep warm. Thanks to that, my family's buffaloes are quite healthy."

According to Ms. Men, to ensure the health of the livestock, the family has used biological bedding to line the barn floor to both keep the buffalo and cows warm and help eliminate bad odors, preventing some diseases in winter such as: septicemia, foot and mouth disease...

Poultry is also carefully cared for by Vu Quang people on cold days.

At this time, Mr. Tran Quoc Hoan's family (Yen Du village, Duc Linh commune) is also implementing cold protection measures for their flock of nearly 400 hill chickens. Mr. Hoan said: "Instead of letting them out in the garden like before, on cold days, I have moved the chickens to raise at home for convenient care and monitoring. It is expected that in about a month, we will sell them and to ensure income at the end of the year, the family has increased the rations of corn and cassava to help the chickens become firmer; used biological products to increase resistance...".

Proactively protecting livestock and poultry from the cold will help Vu Quang people ensure their income at the end of the year.

According to the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock of Vu Quang district, the whole district currently has more than 17,000 buffaloes and cows; 36,000 pigs; nearly 375,000 poultry and a herd of nearly 500 deer.

Mr. Phan Anh Toan - Deputy Director of the Center for Science and Technology Application and Plant and Animal Protection of Vu Quang district said: "To ensure that livestock develop and grow well in winter, the unit has assigned specialized staff to each commune to urge and guide households to apply cold prevention measures for livestock and poultry such as: strengthening livestock barns to ensure veterinary hygiene conditions, disease safety and prevention of hunger and cold. Prepare adequate tools and materials (tarpaulins, heating equipment, coal, firewood...) to warm livestock when severe cold occurs.

During the heating process, it is necessary to ensure fire safety, avoid burns, suffocation, and air suffocation for livestock. Provide adequate food, water, electrolytes, vitamins, etc. to increase the resistance of livestock. Promptly move livestock out of high mountain areas, and let free-range livestock move to safe confinement to avoid the cold. Do not let cattle work or graze freely when the temperature drops below 12 degrees Celsius, especially during severe cold with drizzle...".

In the coming days, the weather is forecast to be very cold and there will be many more cold spells. Farmers in the district need to actively take measures to prevent and combat the cold, ensuring the safety of their livestock.
