The origin of Vu Lan festival comes from the story of Maudgalyayana saving his mother from the realm of hungry ghosts in hell. Thanh De (Maudgalyayana's mother) was a very extravagant, greedy, cruel person and did not believe in the Three Jewels.

Every day, she cooked a lot of food and left it all over the ground. As for her son, Maudgalyayana, he was gentle and hard-working, the complete opposite of his mother.

The boy always picked up the rice grains his mother dropped, washed them, and ate them again. Therefore, everyone around him and his acquaintances loved him very much and praised him.
