Mr. Bui Van Chi, Vice Chairman of Dak Ru Commune People's Committee, Dak R'lap District, said that Dak Ru used to be the commune with the largest cashew area in Dak Nong province.

At its peak in 2015, the cashew area in Dak Ru was about 3,000 hectares. Cashew trees are widely cultivated by local people because they are suitable for the land and climate conditions. Cashew is the main crop of the commune.

Currently, the cashew area of Dak Ru, Dak R'lap district is about 1,600 hectares.

However, in the past 5 years, cashew trees have gradually lost their position as the leading crop of local people. Many households, although wanting to stick with cashew trees, have cut them down due to the effects of the weather and continuous crop failures, switching to other crops. Currently, the cashew area of Dak Ru commune is only 1,600 hectares.

Mr. Chi also said that one of the reasons for the sharp decline in cashew trees is that the locality has not yet built a sustainable industry chain.

Cashew growers in Dak Ru commune have been heavily affected by climate change in recent years, reducing productivity and product quality.

In Dak Ru commune, although there are businesses that purchase cashew nuts, they are completely dependent on floating prices in the market. There is no strong cooperation between people and businesses to develop stable cashew trees.

Farmers also grow cashew trees on a small scale. The productivity and output of the commune's cashew trees are unstable and tend to decrease.

Dak Nong currently has 16,800 hectares of cashew. Cashew output in 2024 is about 72,000 tons. The province has only 1 association with about 100 households participating in the scale of about 4,000 hectares, output of 6,000 tons.

Dak Nong has 9 businesses operating in the preliminary processing and processing of cashew nuts. The main product of these businesses is roasted cashew nuts, with a processing output of over 2,000 tons/year, accounting for 10% of the province's total cashew output.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, Director of Hong Duc Company Limited, Dak R'lap district, said that the company has a great need to build a cashew industry chain in Dak Nong.

The demand for local cashew nuts of Hong Duc Company Limited is very large.

Currently, each year, the company purchases about 10,000 tons of cashew nuts to process its products. However, the province's cashew nuts only meet 10%, or about 1,000 tons.

The company has piloted a model of cooperation with farmers in Tuy Duc district to develop cashew trees. However, to create a big change, it needs stronger support and participation from the State and scientists in aspects such as varieties and cashew tree care techniques.

According to the leader of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, cashew is a traditional and key crop of Dak Nong, but for many years there has been no sustainable development, even decline.

The Department of Agriculture is coordinating with relevant sectors, localities, and scientists to assess the current status of cashew development.

Dak Nong prepares steps to restructure and develop cashew trees according to the value chain, promoting the role of cooperatives, cooperatives, and enterprises to form sustainable links.

In particular, the province focuses on maintaining and stably developing 16,000 hectares of cashew. Cashew growing areas are planned and built in the districts of Cu Jut, Krong No, Dak R'lap, and Tuy Duc.

Cashew industry according to value chain is still a weakness in Dak Nong

Dak Nong actively supports organizations and individuals to enhance their capacity to process cashew nuts and fruits to diversify products. The province reviews and guides people to choose cashew varieties with high productivity, good quality, suitable for ecological and soil conditions to replace degraded areas.

New cashew varieties that have been tested and evaluated by the relevant authorities as suitable for concentrated growing areas such as PN1, BP18, BP27, BP43, BP68, BP 89, AB 29, A05-08... will be supported by the province for farmers to plant, creating high-quality raw material areas.

Dak Nong promotes investment in cashew trees according to the industry chain associated with deep processing.

Dak Nong effectively implements mechanisms and policies related to encouraging, attracting investment, transferring and developing cashew processing technology.
