Russia plans to open new diplomatic missions in Southeast Asian countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the announcement at the opening ceremony of the Russian Consulate General in the Thai city of Phuket on July 15.
According to TASS news agency, the Russian Foreign Minister stated: "Our plan is to open representative offices in other countries friendly to us (in Southeast Asia)."

Mr. Lavrov stressed that the opening of the Russian Consulate General in Phuket city is "an important but not final step" in expanding Russia's diplomatic presence in Southeast Asian countries.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry arrived in Phuket on July 14 during a visit to Thailand. During the visit, Mr. Lavrov is expected to hold talks with his counterpart Don Pramudwinai.
Previously, from July 12-14, Foreign Minister Lavrov attended the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM-56) and related conferences in Jakarta (Indonesia).
He also held a series of bilateral and trilateral meetings within the RIC-2 framework including Russia, Indonesia and China.
