"TikTok has been banned in Nepal on a policy level from today. The technical aspect of the ban will take some time. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will facilitate the ban to come into effect," Minister Sharma said.

Nepal Telecommunication Authority Chairman Purushottam Khanal told Reuters that some internet service providers have blocked TikTok and others are following suit.

The decision comes after TikTok content was found to be causing social disharmony and damaging relationships. Over the past four years, Nepalese police have registered a total of 1,648 cybercrimes, most of which were related to TikTok content. TikTok has not yet responded to the decision.

A few days ago, the Nepal government issued a directive on the operation of social media platforms, requiring platforms to open an office or appoint a representative in the country within three months of the directive coming into effect if they want to operate. Platforms are also required to register with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of Nepal. The directive also lists 19 prohibitions for social media users.
