Born and raised in Giang 2 village (Huong Vinh commune, Huong Khe district), the path to literacy for Ho Van Kien, a Chut ethnic minority student, a 7th grader at Ha Tinh Ethnic Boarding Secondary and High School, was quite difficult, because his father was a border guard, often away from home, and his mother took care of Kien and his younger sister alone. For many years on the journey to school, his mother and Kien had to work hard on a nearly 20 km mountain pass, overcoming hot summer days and cold winters, but never once did they get discouraged.
Those difficulties made Kien even more determined to study so as not to disappoint his parents. For many years, he was an excellent student at the primary level at Huong Lam Primary School and Huong Lam Secondary School. In grade 7, he transferred to the Ethnic Boarding Secondary and High School, where he continued to maintain good academic performance and became an exemplary class monitor, leading in all activities.

Ho Van Kien shared: “When I first moved to the Ethnic Boarding School, I encountered some difficulties when I was not used to living independently, away from my parents and family. However, with the help of teachers and friends, I quickly got used to the new environment so that it would not affect my studies.
I always try to spend a lot of time studying by myself and studying all subjects, but I still have a special affection for literature. I also love reading books in the library. Through each book, each story, I can learn lessons for myself.
From grade 1 to grade 5, Kien continuously achieved the title of excellent student; in grade 6, he achieved the title of excellent student. He is currently leading the learning movement of the class with an average score of over 8 points.

Not only is Ho Van Kien a good student, he is also an active team member and team leader in the school's team activities. He is always a pioneer in movements such as "Thousands of good deeds", "Small plans" or volunteer activities for the community. On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2025, Kien and his classmates collected scrap metal and scrap paper, raising more than 1 million VND to support people in difficult circumstances. The work is small but meaningful, spreading the spirit of "mutual love", helping team members to be more aware of their personal responsibility to the community.
In addition, Kien is very active in guiding 6th grade students to study by themselves in the afternoons, guiding them to find good books to read in the library. As a member of the red flag team, he is very active and exemplary in checking and urging the implementation of school discipline and rules...

Confiding about his dream, Kien said: "Hearing my father talk about the border patrol trips, the times of "eating, living and working together" with the villagers and the affection everyone has for the border guards, I hope that in the future I will be able to wear the green uniform of a soldier, keeping the border peaceful for the Fatherland."
Kien's diligence, perseverance, and relentless striving spirit are always admired and loved by teachers and friends. In particular, he is honored to be one of two ethnic minority students to receive the title of Uncle Ho's Good Children at the provincial level, recognized at the 13th Uncle Ho's Good Children Congress of Ha Tinh province recently.
Talking about her beloved student, homeroom teacher Le Thi Hong Loan commented: “Ho Van Kien is a student with good learning ability, high self-awareness and is always active in all cultural and artistic movements, sports and movements of the Team. In particular, as a class monitor, he also has good management skills, especially in self-study hours, weekend activities, encouraging his friends to support each other in their studies.”
