5G will account for more than 50% of total global data volume by 2025 - That is the assessment of Omdia Research Company given at the 5G Day event, organized by Viettel on December 17 in Ho Chi Minh City.

With two topics "Technology, trend updates" and "Multi-industry 5G applications", the 5G Day event shared in-depth perspectives on the 5G ecosystem, development trends, 5G applications in manufacturing, entertainment, digital transformation and participation in urgent social issues, as well as development opportunities for Cloud and AI in the 5G era.

5G will quickly dominate the global data market

According to a report from Omdia Research, 5G is the fastest growing mobile technology today and will account for more than half of all global data traffic by 2025.

Hoang Hung Hai, product director of Qualcomm, cited data showing that globally, 2.1 billion 5G phones have been sold and more than 300 carriers have launched 5G services. 5G technology is expected to contribute nearly $900 billion to the global economy by 2030.

In Vietnam, the first 5G network has only been commercially launched by Viettel for 2 months, but it already has approximately 4 million users and is expected to increase to 10 million after just 1 year.

Viettel's survey shows that 80% of 5G customers are concentrated in urban areas, industrial parks and tourist areas, while customers in rural areas mainly use 4G. This is also the reason why Viettel decided to prioritize 5G coverage in provincial capitals and areas that will use 5G the most. This is also a common point in the world when deploying 5G.

Mr. Nguyen Van Son - Director of Mobile Service Center, Viettel Telecom - said that 21% of Viettel subscribers already own 5G phones, 70% of subscribers in the coverage area have used 5G and traffic accounts for 30% in deployment areas, showing that the attraction of this technology is very large.

Viettel's pioneering in launching 5G commercially has contributed greatly to Vietnam's Internet ranking globally. Accordingly, Vietnam jumped 8 places to 43rd place after having the first 5G network, with a growth rate of 31% - the strongest increase according to Ookla's assessment. Statistics from iSpeed - the measurement system of the Ministry of Information and Communications - also showed a similar trend in October - the time Viettel launched its 5G network.

Forecasting the development trend of 5G in Vietnam and in the region, Mr. Pham Van Minh, director of mobile solutions at Nokia, said that 5G traffic will surpass 4G in 2025, becoming a technology that drives the economy and opens up many new opportunities for businesses.

"5G has created new business models through network optimization and providing new services such as network slicing and AI. Businesses need to take advantage of opportunities from the transformation," Mr. Minh affirmed.

In addition, Viettel is committed to accompanying businesses in developing a comprehensive and sustainable digital ecosystem, applying AI, IoT and Cloud technologies to all aspects of life," Mr. Tinh emphasized.

Previously, on October 15, 2024, the group launched the first and largest 5G network in Vietnam with more than 6,500 broadcasting stations with outdoor coverage; over 90% of the capital areas of 63 provinces and cities, industrial parks, schools, airports, seaports, ...

5G network can reach speeds of 700Mbps-1Gb, 10 times faster than 4G and has low latency of almost 0. Viettel 5G network deploys 5G simultaneously on both 5G NSA (non stand alone) and 5G SA (stand alone) architecture platforms.
