The USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier is on its way back to the US after operating in the Middle East, ABC News reported on September 12, citing US officials.
Earlier, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the Roosevelt to extend its stay in the Middle East while the USS Abraham Lincoln was ordered from the Pacific to rush to the region. The Lincoln and Roosevelt have been operating in the region for the past three weeks.
What did the US Chief of Staff think after Hezbollah-Israel 'tit for tat'?
The US has stepped up security in the region to help protect Israel from possible attacks by Iran and its proxy groups, following assassinations blamed on Tel Aviv.
Since the Hamas-Israel conflict broke out in October 2023, there has always been at least one US aircraft carrier present in the area, and for some short periods, Washington had two aircraft carriers present at the same time.

The USS Dwight Eisenhower, which had been in the Red Sea for months to help Israel and protect shipping from Houthi attacks in Yemen, returned home after a deployment that lasted more than eight months, the longest since World War II.
The aircraft carrier Roosevelt, based in San Diego, California, and the destroyer USS Daniel Inouye are expected to arrive in the Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility on September 12. Another warship escorting the Roosevelt, the destroyer USS Russell, has left the Middle East and is operating in the South China Sea, US officials said.
Currently, the US still has the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and escort warships in the Gulf of Oman, 2 destroyers and the submarine USS Georgia in the Red Sea, and many other warships in the eastern Mediterranean.
