*South Korea, Ukraine cooperate to deal with North Korea's troop deployment to Russia: The South Korean presidential office confirmed that President Yoon Suk Yeol and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to hold strategic consultations to jointly respond to "illegal" military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, including the deployment of North Korean troops.

The two leaders spoke by phone on October 29 and condemned in the strongest terms North Korea's weapons transfer and troop deployment. (Reuters)

*China launches campaign to “clean up” fake news about the military: The Cyberspace Administration of China has just launched a large-scale campaign to erase social media accounts spreading fake information about the country's military.

*Japanese Senate President intends to resign: On October 29, a source familiar with the matter said that Japanese Senate President Hidehisa Otsuji has informed the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of his intention to resign, citing health reasons.

Otsuji, 84, will remain a member of Japan's parliament until his term ends in the summer of 2025, the sources said. The LDP will soon decide on his successor, who will be elected at an extraordinary session of parliament scheduled to convene on November 11.

*China arrests South Korean citizen for spying for the first time: For the first time in history, China has arrested a South Korean citizen on charges of violating anti-espionage laws. This information was confirmed by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian at a regular press conference on October 29.

The suspect is a man in his 50s living in Hefei City, Anhui Province. The arrest took place late last month and the Chinese side informed the Korean Embassy in Beijing about the incident.

*Historic exercise between Indonesian and Russian navies: On October 29, the Indonesian Navy announced plans to hold its first joint naval exercise with Russia, from November 4-8 in the Java Sea, near the Surabaya naval base. The move comes as newly-elected Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is actively promoting relations with Moscow. Prabowo visited and held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July 2024.

*Russia fears US deployment of nuclear weapons to Denmark: Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin said that Denmark is finding it increasingly difficult to comply with its commitment not to allow nuclear weapons to enter its territory.

According to the Russian diplomat, US Navy nuclear submarines regularly enter Danish territorial waters in the Faroe Islands region, while US strategic bombers have also repeatedly flown into Danish airspace. “The risk of US nuclear weapons being transferred to Denmark will increase many times after Denmark and the United States ratify the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in December 2023,” he warned. *Russia jails IT expert for treason: Russian state media reported on October 29 that the Moscow City Court sentenced IT expert Firuz Dadoboyev to 13 and a half years in prison for treason.

*Saudi Arabia is ready to mediate between Russia and Ukraine: TASS news agency quoted the statement of the Saudi Ambassador to Russia on October 29 saying that Riyadh is ready to mediate between Russia and Ukraine.

Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have been deadlocked since the conflict broke out in early 2022. Countries such as China and some African leaders have launched peace initiatives but to no avail.

Russia has said it is ready for talks on the condition that Ukraine abandons its NATO ambitions and recognises Moscow’s claims to four regions. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented a “victory plan” in October, calling on NATO to immediately extend an unconditional invitation for Ukraine to join the military alliance. *Houthi attack on Israeli industrial zone: An Israeli military spokesman said that on October 29, Houthi forces in Yemen launched drones into an industrial zone in the Israeli city of Ashkelon.

According to the Israeli military, sirens sounded in the city of Ashkelon after detecting a drone entering Israeli territory. However, the device crashed in an open area and caused no casualties.

Speaking before the UN Security Council, Ms. Thomas-Greenfield emphasized: "We will not hesitate to act in self-defense. Iran should not be confused. The United States does not want to escalate tensions further. We believe that the direct conflict between Israel and Iran should end here." (AFP)

*Most US voters do not believe former President Trump will accept defeat: A CNN/SSRS poll released on October 28 said that most US voters do not believe that former President Donald Trump will accept defeat if the 2024 election results do not go his way, and the majority of voters also do not trust the Supreme Court to make the right decision if there is a legal dispute over the election results.

With just a week to go until the general election, only 30% of registered voters surveyed said Trump would accept the election results and concede if he lost, while 73% said Vice President Kamala Harris would accept if she lost.
