The red leaf season in Japan comes late

If spring comes, Japan welcomes a large number of tourists when cherry blossoms bloom, then in autumn, the treetops turn bright yellow and red, also attracting many tourists to visit this country.

In autumn, many localities possess impressive landscapes when the leaves change color such as Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto... and have become famous tourist destinations in Japan.

The season of yellow and red leaves is considered the peak tourist season in Japan. In response to the increasing demand for tourism from customers, many service and travel companies have opened tours to see yellow and red leaves in this country.

According to The Japan Times, this year, the weather forecasting company Japan Meteorological Corp reported that the leaves in Tokyo turned their most distinct yellow on November 26 and crimson on December 1. This is also the time when the trees in Osaka "put on" a similar color.

However, the autumn colors in Nagano and Sapporo will arrive later. The leaves in the two cities will turn yellow and red on November 8 and November 23, about 11 days later than the average year.

Weather forecasting firm Japan Meteorological Corp. said that cold weather will cause leaves to change color more quickly. Warmer weather will slow the change. That’s because autumn temperatures in 2024 are expected to be higher than last year due to the lingering summer weather. This year, Japan experienced its hottest summer on record.

"When the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, green leaves start to turn yellow and red," Hiroki Ito, a representative of the weather forecasting company Japan Meteorological Corp, told The Japan Times.

Therefore, the autumn foliage season will be on schedule or slightly delayed in the north and east. In the west, the autumn foliage will come on schedule. The autumn foliage season will be later than usual across the country.

Every year, Japan announces the cherry blossom schedule in spring, as well as the time when leaves turn yellow and red in autumn to help domestic and foreign tourists plan their visits.

The predicted yellow leaf season is based on the changing color of the ginkgo tree. The red leaf season is based on the changing color of the maple tree.

At the end of October, the next forecast for the yellow and red leaf season will continue to be announced.
