On the evening of May 18, 2023, the 10th anniversary of the broadcast of the "National Defense" TV channel was celebrated with a grand and attractive Gala, attended by many leaders and former high-ranking leaders inside and outside the military. Associate Professor, Dr. Lieutenant General, former Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics Nguyen Tuan Dung was present early and was also one of the last generals to leave, sharing joy with friends, brothers, and comrades who had been with him for a time, building and developing the military and defense newspaper of the whole country.

At the meeting with generals associated with the Central Highlands Front on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification, President Vo Van Thuong warmly mentioned Lieutenant General, Hero of the People's Armed Forces, former member of the Party Central Committee, former Commander of the Third Corps, former Commander of Military Region IV, former National Assembly delegate Nguyen Quoc Thuoc and Lieutenant General Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tuan Dung - former Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics, former Political Commissar, Party Secretary of the Third Corps - Central Highlands Corps, President Vo Van Thuong highly appreciated the achievements of the Generals.
Nguyen Tuan Dung was born in 1952, left his hometown Duc Dong, Duc Tho, Ha Tinh to join the army on April 26, 1970, when the resistance war against the US entered its final stage, the most fierce time. 3 years later, on April 26, 1973, he was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam, and was sent by his unit to study as a political officer at the Academy of Politics, Ministry of National Defense.
For Nguyen Tuan Dung, the vision of "Culture - Ideology - Journalism" was ingrained in his blood since he entered adulthood, influenced by his father, a former enthusiastic, energetic, and diligent Youth Union cadre.
In March 1976, a group of reporters from the People's Army Newspaper, including me (PQT), Nguyen Hong Phuong (former Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association); Nguyen Quang Thong (Major General, former Editor-in-Chief of the People's Army Newspaper); Pham Ngoc Thien (former Deputy Head of the National Assembly's Petition Committee); Colonel, journalist - Editorial Secretary Nguyen Hai Duc, were assigned to the Academy of Politics to attend a training course for intermediate-level advanced theory teachers.
Nguyen Tuan Dung and I were assigned to the same student squad, studying the Faculty of Scientific Socialism Theory. The country was intoxicated with victory, in the context of the centralized bureaucratic subsidy regime that was no longer suitable for the new conditions, we studied in extremely difficult conditions, the relationship between teachers and students, students and students became closer to overcome difficulties together.
While studying as a lecturer in intermediate-advanced political theory, and when studying abroad, Nguyen Tuan Dung left a deep impression: intelligent, good at studying, excellent in exams; deep thinking, sharp criticism, clear political views. Clearly showing his talent for journalism, passion for learning journalism, at that time Nguyen Tuan Dung was an active contributor to the People's Army Newspaper, receiving many awards from the People's Army Newspaper.
Retained as a lecturer, creating a source of key cadres in the political and ideological fields in the army, Nguyen Tuan Dung quickly affirmed his ability to teach theory and conduct independent research. In October 1984, he was sent to study at the Lenin Military-Political Academy, Soviet Union, and successfully defended his doctoral thesis in Philosophy. In 1996, with his creative research works, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Dung was recognized by the State with the title of Associate Professor.

Nguyen Tuan Dung was appointed as Deputy Head of the Faculty of Scientific Socialism of the Academy of Politics in 1989; Head of the Faculty in 1995; Deputy Director of the Academy in 2000; held the important position of Deputy Political Commander, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Third Corps - Central Highlands Corps in 2022; Political Commissar, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Third Corps in 2006 - the main Corps defending the border area of the Central Highlands.
In December 2007, Nguyen Tuan Dung was transferred to the strategic agency in Hanoi - Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army. In 2003, he was promoted to the rank of Major General; in December 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. He was well-trained, had management capacity, was united, diligent and courageous, and was exemplary in words and deeds.
Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics, assigned to be in charge of the ideological and cultural field, including the agencies and press activities of the entire army, Nguyen Tuan Dung grasped the work quickly, correctly detected many problems at the grassroots level, promptly advised the Central Military Commission, the Ministry of National Defense, and directly the General Department of Politics to promptly make correct and effective leadership and direction decisions, quickly and sensitively handle complicated situations that arise, contributing to maintaining the ideological and cultural front in the Army.
In the fields of ideological management, journalism, and culture and arts, Lieutenant General Nguyen Tuan Dung is diligent in researching, grasping quickly, and giving sharp and convincing directions. Not only is he capable of inspiring and convincing when lecturing and conveying the Party's Resolution, Nguyen Tuan Dung is also capable of expressing his opinions through language. Many articles, essays, and studies by Nguyen Tuan Dung published in Party and military newspapers and magazines are standard in viewpoints, have solid arguments, and are sharp in language, and have the power to spread to readers.
He said: “Writing for newspapers helps theoretical thinking and current events not become old but become sharper and more sensitive ”. In recent years, after leaving his management position, Associate Professor, Dr. Lieutenant General Nguyen Tuan Dung wrote articles on “Standards when using social networks”; “Contributing to the health of social networks” … published in the Journalist Magazine (Vietnam Journalists Association), broadcast on national television, and received high praise from public opinion.
Associate Professor, Dr. Lieutenant General Nguyen Tuan Dung loves books and reads diligently every day. He said: "Books are a treasure trove of knowledge that helps us grow up and mature." Not only is he passionate about books, despite his old age, he still goes to the base and sticks with his comrades and colleagues. In May 2023, on the occasion of the 133rd birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, he was awarded the 50-year Party membership badge, and for the third time, Nguyen Tuan Dung rode the waves of the East Sea to return to his comrades in the heroic Truong Sa archipelago - the pioneer island region of the Fatherland.
In 2000, at the 2000 Conference to honor outstanding intellectuals in Hanoi, Nguyen Tuan Dung was named as "Outstanding Intellectual" . The Party's theoretical media channels interviewed Associate Professor, Dr. Lieutenant General Nguyen Tuan Dung on issues that intellectuals are interested in, the core views of the Party on the path to Socialism in Vietnam; building an elite, disciplined, and gradually modern Vietnam People's Army; Protecting the Party's ideological foundation, fighting against peaceful evolution, self-evolution, and self-transformation; Standards for using social networks... A general who loves journalism like him always confided: "With a pen and pages to self-train, learn, and improve theory".
Associate Professor, Doctor, Lieutenant General Nguyen Tuan Dung is humble. For him, the role of the collective is paramount, solidarity, love, wholehearted devotion to teammates and colleagues, and himself for everyone. When teammates and colleagues have problems or difficulties, he wholeheartedly shares and helps. At the age of seventy, when his children have grown up and become successful, Associate Professor, Doctor, Lieutenant General Nguyen Tuan Dung turns more to his roots and homeland.
His life partner, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, played the role of a wonderful assistant, contributing more effort and intelligence to him. In his old age, Nguyen Tuan Dung opened up and took care of an orchard. The delicious oranges, sweet grapefruits, and Luc Ngan lychees that he bred and collected to take care of were not only a source of joy but also a gathering place for friends, teammates, and colleagues. Many teammates and friends were quite surprised by General Dung's knowledge of "Agronomy" !
Shining on his chest are the Second Class Military Exploit Medal, the First Class Resistance Medal, the First, Second, and Third Class Glorious Soldier Medals; the Victory Flag Medal, and the 50-year Party membership badge. The talent and virtue are smooth in the general who loves journalism.
