In Ho Chi Minh City, the price of Ri6 and Dona durian, grade 1, ranges from 70,000 to 120,000 VND/kg. Grade 2 durian costs 50,000 to 100,000 VND/kg. Compared to the end of June, the price of durian has increased by 20,000 to 25,000 VND/kg (depending on the type).
Ms. Kim Xuyen - a durian trader on Nguyen Tri Phuong Street (District 5) - said that durian in the Western provinces is gradually entering the end of the season, while in the Central Highlands provinces, durian is just entering the beginning of the season, supply is decreasing, and prices are increasing.
“In May, durian prices at many points of sale differed by 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg due to the quality of the source. Now durian prices continue to increase, causing purchasing power to decrease because people are saving on spending,” said Ms. Xuyen.
The price of Lai Thieu mangosteen (Binh Duong) ranges from 60,000-80,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, Thai mangosteen is sold at traditional market stalls for 55,000-60,000 VND/kg.
“This year, mangosteen production in some provinces in the country has decreased, so the supply to the market is low, so the price is high. Thai mangosteen is imported in large quantities, and the price is cheaper than domestic mangosteen,” said Ms. Nguyen Thuy Nga, a fruit vendor at Hoa Hao market (District 10).
The leader of Thu Duc agricultural wholesale market (HCMC) said that Thai goods still account for the majority of the market, with wholesale prices ranging from 40,000 to 60,000 VND per kilogram depending on the type. Meanwhile, Vietnamese mangosteens are in short supply, with most gardeners or traders delivering directly to customers instead of selling through the market.
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the main durian harvest in the Central Highlands provinces will begin in September and October, which is expected to contribute to boosting fruit and vegetable export growth in the coming time.
It is estimated that in June, the amount of durian exported reached 600 million USD, bringing the total turnover in the first 6 months of the year to 1.5 billion USD.
The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association forecasts that fruit and vegetable exports this year will grow by 15-20%, with turnover possibly reaching 7-7.5 billion USD, a new record for the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry.
